Q&A: Saint Louis coach Cal Lee on Kahuku

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2017

Two days before the big day, Cal Lee is in a good place. Focused. Relaxed. Details, details, details. After 14 Oahu Prep Bowl titles, two state championship crowns, coaching at the University of Hawaii, a stint as AFL2 Hawaiian Islanders coach, and contributing to Kalani’s ascent out of the doldrums, he is back home. Defending titles, that’s something that is never easier than winning them. But Saint Louis is in position to win a second Open Division crown in a […]

Friends and family gathered around the Saint Louis football players after practice Thursday at the school’s campus. It was a picture-taking moment. Brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, girlfriends, grandfathers. A big gathering. It was an important moment. The season is almost over. Another important moment comes Saturday, when the Crusaders (9-0) put their 14-game winning streak on the line in the Open Division state championship. It comes, as usual, against Kahuku (11-1). It’s the third year in a row the two […]

Atuaia joins running back Enoch Nawahine and defensive end Samson Reed as Red Raiders who […]

Huddleston and his Vikings return to the island on Saturday to take on Damien in the state tournament, trying to etch a Big Island school onto the Koa trophy for the first time. Q&A: Saint Louis offensive coordinator Ron Lee

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2017

The 1979 Kaiser Cougars rolled and rolled all the way to the Oahu Prep Bowl, where then-head coach Ron Lee led them to a 27-7 victory over Kamehameha. In the years that passed, he continued working at a hotel while assistant coaching at Saint Louis (with brother and head coach Cal Lee), then the University of Hawaii, Kalani and finally back at Saint Louis. He remains the offensive coordinator, one of the original run-and-shoot gurus, here and elsewhere. Times change, […]
