The ILH was about to split into public and private school divisions, which ultimately set the stage for the public schools leaving the ILH for the OIA. Saint Louis won its fourth consecutive Prep Bowl in 1989 with its best team yet. The Crusaders, behind coach of the year Cal Lee, finished 16th in the country according to USA Today’s Super 25 rankings and extended their winning streak to a staggering 54 games. Thirty years after Kamehameha won its only Prep Bowl, the Warriors claimed their first state championship in 2004 behind running back Jayson Rego. Rego, who was the offensive player of the year in both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers, rushed for 212 yards on a staggering 39 carries in the state final to lead the Warriors over Leilehua and quarterback Bryant Moniz. The 1986 prep football all-star teams had the same top players in each newspaper. Saint Louis defensive lineman Manly Williams won the defensive and lineman of the year honors while Kahuku tailback Richard Stevenson won offensive and back of the year honors. The Honolulu Advertiser went with Pac-Five quarterback David Searle on its first team while the Star-Bulletin chose Kahuku’s Walter Santiago as its quarterback. Makoa Freitas, Reggie Torres and Siuaki Livai are among the applicants and interviewees for the open Kahuku football coaching job, according to sources. At least 16 people applied for the job, a list that also includes Kahuku junior varsity head coach Sterling Carvalho, Red Raiders assistant David Te’o and former Kahuku assistant Marvin Cravens. The turn of the millennium in 2000 basically served as the launching point for Kahuku’s run of championships that has lasted 17 years. These seniors were among the last crop to play at Honolulu Stadium and the final year before the Star-Bulletin began doing its All-State team.
