The newspapers agreed on the top awards for the ILH all-star team with Roosevelt quarterback Mike Lum the back of the year and Farrington guard Deroy Lavatai the lineman of the year. When Interscholastic League of Honolulu athletic directors voted unanimously in the affirmative Monday, it put the finishing touches on a historic football agreement with the Oahu Interscholastic Association. For 2018 and 2019 under a two-year pilot program, the OIA and ILH will play a full slate of interleague, nonleague, regular-season games, according to sources from both leagues. Of the four different players selected with the top honors, there was only one unanimous selection from both papers. Kahuku’s Kona Schwenke began the year as a four-star recruit and the name everyone knew on the Kahuku defensive line. Punahou made its first appearance in the Prep Bowl in 1977, losing 27-6 to Waianae. The Seariders ended Kamehameha’s three-year run as Prep Bowl champions and won for the first time since taking the inaugural Prep Bowl in 1973. The Star-Bulletin made its first All-State team in 1977, anointing Punahou’s Mark Tuinei as its first lineman of the year winner.
