By Paul Honda on June 6, 2018

Wednesday was a winning day for Tim Horn. The 6-foot-3 Punahou senior-to-be began the day with a call from the University of Washington, which offered him a football scholarship. That gives Horn, a placekicker, offers from three schools. The other two are Hawaii and Army. Then, in the afternoon under a blazing-hot sun at Kunuiakea Stadium, Horn was named most valuable player among the PKs. His classmate, Tyler Sato, was named the MVP Long Snapper by coaches. Long snappers get their spotlight at GPA Showcase

By Paul Honda on June 5, 2018

The GPA Showcase began with the unsung specialists. Nowhere does football get more unsung than it does for the long snapper. Former Saint Louis three-year long snapper Peyton Yanagi, who is walking on at Oregon this fall, was one of the coaches on the field at high noon. “I’ve only got six guys (long snapping), but they bring something special. I think it’s just about cleaning up their technique. They have the right ideas,” Yanagi said. His background in coaching […]

All of the athletes are looking for knowledge and exposure. On hand are dozens of college […]

State football OT is one of many HIADA topics

By Nick Abramo on May 29, 2018

The longest football game in Hawaii high school history has led to a proposal by athletic directors to ensure that there won’t be a repeat performance. It was the main reason why Nov. 18’s Aloha Stadium tripleheader lasted almost 12 hours — from 2 p.m. on a Saturday until 1:04 a.m. Sunday. High school administrators typically want to get their […]

Mariota’s Motiv8 Foundation is again the presenting sponsor for next month’s GPA Showcase Hawaii with the aim of giving local high school football players greater opportunity and exposure. The sixth annual GPA Showcase Hawaii — featuring skills, lineman and special teams clinics — is set for June 5-6 at Kamehameha and offers players who might not be able to […]
