R&S Lab: Kapolei 2015-16 vs. Moanalua 2018

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2018

COMMENTARY BY PAUL HONDA This isn’t a post about June Jones. It isn’t about Taulia Tagovailoa. OK, maybe this is, but it’s also about a one-dimensional offense. A quarterback who is probably a world-class dart champion. And his catchers of spirals. His many catchers of spiraling pigskins. But first, June Jones. In 2016, the former head coach at Hawaii, a guru of the run-and-shoot offense who once could have easily won the election to become governor of Hawaii (my opinion) […]

Punahou senior Tamatoa Falatea will join five other Buffanblu players in the 2019 Polynesian Bowl. The 6-foot, 190-pound wide receiver has been selected a Polynesian Bowl All Star and will join teammates Duke Clemens, Tim Horn, Maninoa Tufono, Kaulana Makaula and Marist Liufau in the annual high school football all-star game on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Aloha Stadium. Football playoff scenarios on Oahu

By Billy Hull on October 10, 2018

The OIA-ILH football alliance has brought a lot of change this season, including to the playoff formats in the respective leagues. The regular season ends this week for all teams except for the OIA Open Division, which is making up two games next week due to Hurricane Lane back in August. The playoff picture is pretty clear but there are still a couple of meaningful games left. Below is a look at where teams stand. ILH OPEN DIVISION All 3 […]

Family before rivalry for Kamakawiwo’ole ohana

By Nick Abramo on October 9, 2018

The Saint Louis-Kamehameha rivalry is not going to rip up Kila Kamakawiwo’ole‘s family. Kamakawiwo’ole is a former Kaimuki and University of Hawaii defensive end, and his twin sons — Kila and Kalanikau — are scheduled to play against each other in Friday’s rivalry game. The twins are seniors. The younger Kila is a linebacker for the top-ranked Crusaders (7-0, 6-0 ILH Open), and Kalani is a defensive end for the seventh-ranked Warriors (4-4, 3-3). It’s the regular-season finale for both […]

Pupule ballot and concession stand all-stars

By Paul Honda on October 8, 2018

Many weeks have passed since I last posted my pupule ballot for the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. It’s part science and math, part art, part pupuleness. It is, as always, not real food. It has the nutritional value of whipped cream. And yet, isn’t whipped cream the thing everyone allows onto their frappuccino at Starbucks? (I always ask for none.) But first, some pupule honors for our friends who work tirelessly at the concession stands. Campbell fried noodles Chef Ligaya […]

Campbell shoots up to No. 4 in state

By Billy Hull on October 8, 2018

After just its fifth win in 28 tries — and first since 1977 in Ewa Beach — against Kahuku, Campbell is back to its highest ranking ever in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. The Sabers are No. 4 after jumping two spots following a 28-27 win over the Red Raiders on Saturday night. The Sabers were No. 4 earlier this season before losing to No. 1 Saint Louis, No. 2 Punahou and No. 3 Mililani by a combined score of 150-35. With […]

Hutcherson signs off after 25 years at Kaiser

By Billy Hull on October 8, 2018

“After 25 years, this is the last Kaiser game I am going to announce. It has been the joy of my life. Thank you so much, I will forever bleed the blue and gold for Kaiser. Have a good night and God bless.” — And with that, Jimmy Hutcherson stepped away from the microphone high above Kaiser Stadium for the final time after a quarter-century on Friday night. Known as “Hutch” to the countless number of kids he has worked […]

VIDEO: No. 6 Campbell stuns No. 4 Kahuku

By Paul Honda on October 8, 2018

Kahuku controlled the ball and the clock, but Campbell rallied for a touchdown and successful extra-point kick with 19 seconds left to eke out a 28-27 win in Ewa Beach. Full highlights are below, along with a post-game interview with clutch playmaker Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. The sophomore played defensive back for the first time, and as a wide receiver hauled in nine passes for 147 yards and the game-deciding touchdown.
