By Christian Shimabuku on January 16, 2019

Treven Ma’ae didn’t have much time to say goodbye. Once he got accepted to Bishop Gorman in January 2018, he had to move quickly to be able to make in time for the start of the new semester in Las Vegas. Ma’ae was a junior at Kapolei before deciding to take a leap of faith in joining one of the nation’s top prep football programs. Jones, Tagovailoa reunite at Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on January 15, 2019

Three years ago, the Kapolei Hurricanes had the best season in school history. The only time Kapolei won 10 games in the same year was punctuated by its only victory ever in the state football tournament, a 33-21 win over ILH runner-up Punahou in the first round of the six-team Open Division state tournament. They did it with a sophomore quarterback and a former head coach in the NFL and college as offensive coordinator. A lot has changed since June […]

By Paul Honda on January 15, 2019

The gap between Open Division and Division I football is real, and appreciated. Then there’s the gap between D-I and D-II. Three levels of state championships in Hawaii. It is a beautiful thing. For Kohala, playing in eight-man football was challenging enough, never mind the 11-man game in D-II. But the dominoes have begun to fall, and Pahoa’s decision to leap-frog into D-II football in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation leads Kohala in a tight spot. Ka‘u, the BIIF eight-man […]

Q&A: Kohala AD Laurie Koustik on 8-man, 11-man football

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2019

With the Big Island Interscholastic Federation football picture changing, one team’s ambition is another’s caution. Pahoa announced at the league’s recent athletic directors meeting that it would move from eight-man football to 11-man. The Daggers were 2-2 in league play last fall, but more importantly, they had more than 30 players. They haven’t played in 11-man since 1999, but the timing is right. That prompted Ka‘u to follow suit. Like Pahoa, the Trojans finished the season with more than 30 […]

Q&A: Ka‘u AD Kalei Namohala on 8-man football, $1,200 bus rentals

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2019

Ka‘u is a pristine place with unspoiled beaches, great fishing and hunting, and just enough modernization without tainting the country lifestyle residents love. It’s also a place where the only football field hasn’t had working lights for three years. When Ka‘u athletic director Kalei Namohala looks at her teams’ road games, it’s always a nightmare. Bus rentals range from $1,100 to $1,200 for drives to Keaau, Kohala and everywhere in between. With Pahoa declaring that it will leave eight-man football […]

BIIF will add 3 teams to 11-man football next season

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2019

News out of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation athletic directors’ meeting will have a big impact for Pahoa, Ka‘u and Kohala. The three schools had fielded eight-man football teams in recent years. Pahoa announced its plan to move into 11-man territory, and Ka‘u and Kohala will follow suit since staying in eight-man isn’t feasible. Pahoa and Ka‘u had rosters of 30 or more players, so the time is right. “We started in 2013 with 22 kids, and only 18 or […]
