Samoa football has come a long way since first trip to Oahu

By Jerry Campany on August 22, 2019

The goodwill between Hawaii and Samoa continues on Friday night high above Honolulu. Fagaitua will visit Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium for the first time on Friday, taking on the ILH’s Warriors. The Vikings will be making their first trip to Oahu since 2015, when they took on Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium and got a taste of Tua Tagovailoa in a 55-6 loss. Samoa has sent eight teams to Oahu over the years, but only Samoana has left a winner. The […]

Q&A: Saint Louis coach Cal Lee on No. 4 Campbell

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2019

One of life’s guarantees is that Cal Lee will be first on the bus. Oh, there are occasions when he is in conversation after a game with old friends — coaches or former players now coaching — or is interviewed by media long enough. But on most nights, the Saint Louis coach makes a beeline to the yellow bus whether it’s outside Aloha Stadium or any other field. He could drive to games and meet the team in the locker […]

Through three games this season, Failauga has totaled 762 rushing yards on 94 carries with seven touchdowns. He is nearly 500 rushing yards […]

By Christian Shimabuku on August 21, 2019

When the Kalaheo High School student body filled the bleachers at its new field, the seemingly simple moment was actually decades in the making. The Lee A. Cashman Athletic Field was unveiled on Wednesday morning, named after former Mustangs athletics director Lee Cashman. A full set of bleachers, a scoreboard and two football goal posts — features the school didn’t have until now — were among the upgrades seen. “When I saw Mr. Cashman and the tears in his eyes, […]

Ex-Kealakehe SB Boo Jones sparks Konawaena over former team

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2019

The new-look Konawaena-Kealakehe rivalry fell a bit flat. With a new coaching staff, new quarterback and new system — plus some quality transfers from Konawaena — Kealakehe has the potential and promise that has fans excited. Expectations, however, are a bit on hold after Konawaena’s 24-7 win to open the BIIF Division I regular season on Saturday. For the Wildcats, a full house at Julian Yates Field saw more of the same. Konawaena has had the upper hand in recent […]
