Castle is out, but not down

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2014

The season is over for Castle, but not the hope. When coach Nelson Maeda spoke about the Knights’ 2-6 season after Friday night’s 34-0 road playoff loss to Kapolei, he did it while spinning it forward. “We got some glimpse of success, and we have something to build on for next … this coming season,” he said. That pause between the words “next” and “this coming season” said a lot. You could tell he was already thinking about, well, the […]

Campbell moves on to face Leilehua

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 11, 2014

Campbell’s opening round game in the OIA Division I playoffs was all but decided in the first quarter. If recent history holds, the Sabers’ quarterfinal matchup with Leilehua could come down to the final possession. Campbell advanced in the bracket with a 56-0 first-round win over Waipahu on Friday to set up a meeting with Leilehua, the second seed out of the OIA Red, next week in Wahiawa. “It’s going to be a big game for us, a big challenge […]

LIVE BLOG: Punahou 47, Kamehameha 7, final

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2014

Pre-game The first game featured 90 pass attempts combined by Pac-Five and Damien, so this game is a wee bit behind schedule. It’s about 5 minutes until kickoff, which means a 9 p.m. start. Rain started to fall during warmups, for what that’s worth. Should be a classic, right? I’d love to see a scoring circus, but my gut says this will be a defensive struggle. I’m hearing that Kamehameha DB Dylan Kane and another starter may not start. That […]

LIVE BLOG: Kaiser 54, Moanalua 48, FINAL

By Billy Hull on October 10, 2014

The best of the four OIA Division I playoff games this weekend could be at Kaiser Stadium as the host Cougars (4-3) take on Moanalua (3-4). Kaiser hasn’t won a Division I playoff game in the state championship era (since 1999) and has lost six in a row to Na Menehune dating back to 2004. Moanalua is coming off a strong effort against No. 2 Mililani, losing 46-28. The winner faces the Trojans next week in a quarterfinal game. Kaiser, […]

The OIA varsity girls volleyball regular season ended Wednesday night with six matches in the East. Playoffs begin next Wednesday with defending champion Mililani the No. 1 seed out of the West while undefeated Moanalua gets the No. 1 seed from the East in the Red playoffs. Na Menehune is searching for their first OIA Red championship since 2007. Radford, the No. 1 seed out of the West, is the defending OIA White champion while Kalaheo, which beat Division I […]

Kaiser volleyball clinches playoff spot

By Billy Hull on October 6, 2014

A key match to determine the final OIA Red playoff berths on Monday ended with a Kaiser sweep of Farrington. The Cougars (5-5) picked up their second win against a Division I opponent, knocking off the Governors 25-22, 25-17 on Farrington’s senior night. Senior Karley DeMello had a game-high 10 kills and middle Teuila Gardner came up big in the second set with five of her six kills. Gardner hit .600 in the match while DeMello ended at .444. Cougars […]

Pollsters split on Kahuku and Farrington

By Jerry Campany on October 6, 2014

Go ahead and put them in different divisions, conversation always comes down to Kahuku and Farrington anyway. After showing their stuff in Saturday’s Aloha Stadium doubleheader, the Governors and Red Raiders are tied for fifth in the Star-Advertiser’s latest football poll. It might not be decided until the OIA semifinals if they get that far. Farrington plays the winner between Aiea and Waianae while Kahuku gets either Kapolei or Castle. Should they both win, they would meet before the OIA […]

State semifinalists still have the stuff

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2014

On Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, No. 6 Farrington did just enough to earn a 29-27 win over No. 7 Campbell in a game that decided second place and a first-round bye in the OIA Blue Division. Both teams made it to the semifinals of the state tournament a year ago, and both gave a signal that, while they may be running teams in an era of pass-crazy squads, they are not going to be easy to beat from here […]
