Governors: ‘All about business now’

By Paul Honda on November 13, 2014

It isn’t quite 3 o’clock yet on this Thursday afternoon, but the Farrington Governors are on the field. It’s a row and another row and another. Practice begins this way every day. The Governors don’t just shout it out. They sing their alma mater. They use finesse. They enunciate every word of a song burned deep into their memory banks, standing under a hot sun, wearing their shoulder pads, shorts and cleats. The helmets go on after the song, which […]

Rest is part of Mililani’s preparation

By Nick Abramo on November 12, 2014

Mililani coach Rod York isn’t taking the state tournament first-round bye that his team earned for granted. “Heal up, rest up,” York said. “Stay healthy, that’s what we’re trying to do.” The last two days, the second-ranked Trojans (11-0) practiced for 45 minutes each. On Thursday, York said, they will taper it off a little in preparation for Saturday’s 4:30 p.m. Division I semifinal game against No. 4 Farrington. “The practices are at a high level, though,” he added. York […]

Punahou loose, focused, hungry

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

TThe campus is bustling, as always, at Punahou School. Things can get hectic between classrooms, homework and practice. The Buffanblu football team finds good use for little breaks here and there. With practice still a few minutes from starting, they got on the field and had some nice, loud fun kicking a soccer ball into a goal. By 4 p.m. sharp, they were running from sideline to sideline. It was just helmets and pads on this Wednesday afternoon, but work […]

Tagovailoa’s third offer: Hawaii

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2014

Saint Louis’ football season has been over for a few weeks, but the action never ends for some of its standout players. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received a scholarship offer this week — this third — and this one is from the University of Hawaii, according to Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance. UCLA was the first to offer the 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore. Then came Texas Tech, which operates the four-wide, run-and-shoot under coach Kliff Kingsbury. The southpaw passed for 2,571 yards and […]

VIDEO: Caging Sabers: Governors’ lockdown

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

For a long stretch, the Maui Sabers gave Farrington all it could handle. The MIL Division I champions jumped to a 6-0 lead, using a nice scheme in the trenches to create gaps right up the middle. That didn’t last, however. With their big RB, Onosai Emelio, hampered by a late-season knee injury, the Sabers rushing attack was stymied by Farrington — they finished with 120 rushing yards on 42 carries, 2.9 per try. Farrington limited Maui to 209 total […]

Private school pipeline (extended)

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

>> The North Shore is often raided for its star athletes, and that’s just part of the subplot in Saturday’s state football semifinal game between No. 1 Punahou and No. 3 Kahuku (Here’s the longer version of this morning’s story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) All any parent wants for his or her children is opportunity. The lure of a better life — and happiness — is the driving force for all kinds of life-changing decisions. For many people, it was […]

St. John Bosco (Calif.), which defeated Saint Louis early in the season, is No. 6 in the rankings. Bishop Gorman (Nev.) is No. 1. Punahou is at No. 22 in the USA Today Super 25 rankings, the same position it held a week ago. Punahou will play Kahuku on Saturday at Aloha Stadium in the […]
