Mid-Pacific senior basketball player Ben Swanson returned from Minnesota to be on the bench one last time and share the experience of senior night with his Owls teammates. His father, Brad, who is fighting an […]

By Paul Honda on February 11, 2015

Day 2 of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships is here. Questions abound. First, how good is Baldwin? The Bears ousted a good Leilehua squad 44-30 on Tuesday in the McKinley bracket. It was 18-15 at halftime, Baldwin ahead, and they simply pulled away. They kept wraps around high-scoring guard Jerri Maluyo (five points) and post scorer Tywanna Abbott (no points). I don’t know if Abbott got hurt or was in foul trouble or both, but the Bears […]

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2015

Pupule’s Fab 50: Girls Basketball With the state tournament right around the corner, Jerry asked me for a list of 15 for office/photo purposes. So I made a list of nearly 50. Am I missing anybody? Let me know. Note: This is not a final all-state list or anything like that. It’s just my opinion, and there are a few players on this list I haven’t seen. But most of them have been watched by these Pupule eyes. Pupule’s Fab […]

Kamehameha cheerleaders win in Orlando

By Nick Abramo on February 9, 2015

The Kamehameha cheerleaders defended their title last weekend. The Warriors’ 14-member squad won the medium division of the “Game Day Championships” portion of the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships last weekend in Orlando, Fla., and will return to Oahu on Tuesday. Kamehameha defeated nine other teams in that division, which is a relatively new category. It requires teams to do three routines, a fight song, a sideline cheer and a halftime or timeout cheer. “Cheerleading is so competitive now, […]
