Moanalua junior Matautia commits to UH

By Nick Abramo on April 11, 2015

It was quite a week for Moanalua’s Austin Matautia. On Thursday, Charlie Wade — the Hawaii volleyball coach — came by to watch 6-foot-4 outside hitter Matautia and others play in a tournament at Kamehameha. On Friday, Matautia went to the Stan Sheriff Center, thanks to Wade’s invitation, and watched the Rainbow Warriors defeat Stanford in three sets. After the match, Matautia’s dream pretty much came true when he orally accepted a scholarship to play for Wade. There is a […]

King Kekaulike’s Cowell is a hidden gem

By Nick Abramo on April 11, 2015

If you want to be seen as a national volleyball prospect, Upcountry Maui is not the ideal place to be. But it might not matter for outside hitter Colton Cowell of King Kekaulike. Prior to the Cowell and his Na Alii teammates’ tournament match against Kamehameha on Thursday night, Warriors coach Kainoa Downing made sure reporters covering the event knew what kind of talent was in the gym. Downing immediately pointed to Cowell warming up, and Cowell — despite two sprained […]

Malepeai, Pritchard invited to Blue-Grey game

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2015

Five Hawaii players have been invited to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl in December in Arlington, Texas. Two players — Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai and Farrington linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard — will join three others from Hawaii in the game. It was previously reported that three offensive linemen from the 50th state were invited to play in the game — Saint Louis’ Nate Herbig, Kaiser’s Michael Eletise and Kapolei’s Sean Auwae. All five players are going into their senior seasons this fall.

Pritchard transitions from American Samoa

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2015

Harvard no. Yale yes. A recruiting website has Farrington linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard listed as having received interest from Harvard. It’s not true, Pritchard said, but Yale made a call. “A Yale assistant coach messaged me and wanted to know my grades and SAT scores,” Pritchard said during a phone interview Friday. Pritchard has not taken the SATs yet and said he has good grades but still would like to bring them up. The 6-foot, 200-pounder confirmed he has offers from […]

Beach having a blast in Hawaii

By Stan Lee on April 10, 2015

Punahou might have been too nice of a host on the first night of the Clash of the Titans. The Buffanblu were swept by Huntington Beach, the Nation’s No. 1 team, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 on Friday. “To play in this environment is unbelievable,” said Huntington Beach coach Craig Pazanti. “The student section, the gym, the atmosphere was amazing. We’ve played in some hostile crowds but this is something we definitely want to do to get us ready for the end […]

Pearl City product is the baseball coach now

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2015

Gavin Concepcion is at ease on the baseball field, and in speaking with him on the Pearl City grass Friday, that peacefulness is not just because his Chargers had just defeated No. 1 Mililani 4-3. Concepcion, in his first year at the helm, talked about how the game of baseball gave his team one (yes, the Chargers took advantage of three Trojans errors in the bottom of the seventh to score three times for the win) and how next time […]

Clash of the Titans tonight

By Jerry Campany on April 10, 2015

Punahou’s annual Clash of the Titans volleyball tournament begins its sixth edition on Friday night, and if the past is any indication it will be filled with plenty of close matches. The Buffanblu will face Huntington Beach, the nation’s No. 1 program, on Friday and Mira Costa on Saturday. The Buffanblu are 7-3 in the event and has never lost both matches but has swept both twice. Hawaii Baptist is back to represent Hawaii for the first time since 2012, […]

A scout’s perspective of Campbell’s Kahaloa

By Nick Abramo on April 7, 2015

By now, most Hawaii high school baseball fans know that Campbell right-hander Ian Kahaloa is being scouted by all 30 major league teams. The senior has been close to unhittable so far this season, and there’s been plenty of talk about his prospects at the next level. Most of the scouts who have filled the press boxes with their radar guns at the various OIA West fields to see Kahaloa have been told by their teams to not speak with […]
