Malepeai’s visits to Oregon, USC are unofficial

By Nick Abramo on June 11, 2015

Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai left for an unofficial football visit to Oregon on Wednesday night. The Ducks are at the top of his pecking order — out of the 18 FBS Division I schools that have offered him scholarships — and he told OregonLive.com earlier this week that he’s 50-50 on giving his oral commitment there. Those coin-flip odds are just that. He has three other schools he’s interested in, according to his mom, Tali Malepeai, who spoke with […]

Bosworth’s life has meaning again (extended)

By Nick Abramo on June 10, 2015

This is an extended version of a story about former Oklahoma and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth that ran in the Wednesday edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Brian Bosworth was an electric football player with a flamboyant personality and a colorful haircut to match. The emphasis of the last sentence is on “was.” As “The Boz,” Bosworth was a consensus All-American at Oklahoma in 1985 and ’86, but to some, he was a consensus nutcase who called attention to himself, […]

Mililani’s Malepeai is 50-50 on going to Ducks

By Nick Abramo on June 10, 2015

Mililani running back Vavae Malepeai told OregonLive.com that he is “50-50” on committing to Oregon. Malepeai, who helped the Trojans to the Division I state championship a year ago, is scheduled to visit the Oregon campus this weekend. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior-to-be is a Honolulu Star-Advertiser two-time first-team All-State selection. Malepeai rushed for more than 1,000 yards the past two seasons, and he scored 23 touchdowns as a junior. Eighteen FBS Division I schools have offered Malepeai a scholarship, including […]

By Billy Hull on June 9, 2015

Recent Campbell graduate Ian Kahaloa was selected in the fifth round (No. 145 overall) by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Kahaloa watched the draft at home with most of his baseball teammates. He received a text from his advisor where he would go roughly four picks before he was taken, but waited to say anything until his name was read aloud. “I just had the baseball boys (over). They were waiting,” […]

ESPN’s Neil Everett surprises Hall of Honor

By Jerry Campany on June 8, 2015

The 33rd annual Hall of Honor banquet felt a lot like a family reunion. Neil Everett, last year’s speaker, made an appearance via video to surprise Hawaii News Now’s Fran Weems, this year’s featured speaker. Weems had been inducted a decade before. But for all those two professionals said, the most memorable words were spoken by Kamehameha’s Sarah Lau on behalf of all of the inductees, borrowed from a Navy Seal: “Make your bed.” Here are Sunday night’s 12 […]

By Nick Abramo on June 7, 2015

NINTH IN A SERIES ON SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES ON OAHU It’s a new era for Waianae football, and the path the Seariders follow in the near future starts now during spring drills under first-year coach Walter Young. Many devoted fans of the Waianae program remember the 18 Oahu Interscholastic Association championships from 1962 to 1997. They also recall the 14 Oahu Prep Bowl appearances, including three titles and one co-title, from 1973 to 1998. Since the state tournament started in […]

Hall pass: Kanawai Noa

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2015

No receiver in the history of high school football in Hawaii has covered more ground than Punahou’s Kanawai Noa, but he might have left more yards on the sidelines. Noa will be inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor on June 7 at Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom. The three-sport star finished his career with 3,510 receiving yards and 36 touchdowns, passing fellow Hall of Honor inductee Gerald Welch of Saint Louis in his last high school game. […]

Hall pass: Micah Ma’a

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2015

Punahou never rebuilds, it just reloads with guys like Micah Ma’a. With Hall of Honor recepient Larry Tuileta gone, the Buffanblu boys volleyball team was supposed to come back to the pack a little bit. But everything seemed just the same, if not better, as Punahou cruised to another state crown. A huge part of that seamless transistion was provided by Micah Ma’a, and he will be rewarded for it with induction into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor […]
