New season, new vibe for Punahou girls

By Nick Abramo on August 22, 2015

Winning three out of the last four Division I state championships doesn’t mean a whole lot when a new season begins. That’s the case for the Punahou girls volleyball team as it prepares for the defense of its crown at the Ann Kang Invitational this week. “It’s a new vibe,” coach Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson said about the 2015 version of the Buffanblu, intimating that it isn’t better or worse than last year, just different. Gone to graduation are hitter McKenna Granato […]

Opportunities few for Castle offense

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 22, 2015

Castle’s combo of quarterback Willie Ewaliko and receiver Jeremy McGoldrick didn’t have much of a chance to build on two productive performances to open the season. McGoldrick entered Friday’s game against Waianae with 18 receptions for 354 yards and six touchdowns. But the Seariders’ ball-control running game kept the ball away from the Castle offense and Waianae’s defense took measures to contain McGoldrick in a 36-20 win at the Knights’ field. “We couldn’t get enough snaps,” Castle coach Nelson Maeda […]

Onside kick helps Waianae take control

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 22, 2015

While Waianae’s emphasis on the ground game was expected, a surprise on special teams helped the Seariders establish control of Friday’s game at Castle. After marching 76 yards in 16 plays in a seven-plus minute scoring drive on their first possession, the Seariders kept the offense rolling by recovering an onside kick. “We just noticed something they did so we tried to capitalize on it,” first-year Waianae coach Walter Young said. The gamble was rewarded three plays later when running […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis 55, Faga‘itua 6, F

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2015

It’s only 5:10 p.m., more than two hours from kickoff, but the Faga‘itua Vikings are already on the turf here at Aloha Stadium. No helmets or pads yet. Just getting their feet acclimated to the synthetic turf here. Even in just shorts and their bright red jersey tops, they look relaxed, focused and in sync. What else would we expect from one of the premier programs from American Samoa. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. There are questions floating out […]

Keawekane’s Wildcats dream came true

By Nick Abramo on August 21, 2015

Konawaena head coach Ainsley Keawekane is on Oahu for this week’s Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament. He obviously didn’t come here to escape the mugginess and heat of Kailua-Kona. It’s the same stifling weather here, maybe worse. A few hours after flying in on Thursday, he actually went and changed his clothes due to the sweat factor. The two-time defending Division II state championship coach was greeted by Hawaii Prep World at the ‘Iolani gym. The discussion turned to the […]

(Here’s more about the Faga‘itua Vikings, who will play No. 2 Saint Louis tonight at Aloha Stadium. They have been on Oahu since Aug. 1. The weekend prep football preview is in this morning’s Star-Advertiser. Subscriber content.) The Faga‘itua Vikings’ voyage began with hard work and sweat back home. “We thank all our families and our community back home,” Coach Suaese “Pooch” Ta‘ase said. “We had to raise $125,000 to get here. We did every kind of fundraising there is. […]
