Nanakuli hoping for a lot of Sunshine

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Despite a week of heavy rain around the islands, Waialua coach Lincoln Barit has probably seen his share of sunshine. Barit spent the week preparing his Bulldogs for a clash with reigning OIA White champion Nanakuli. The Golden Hawks have weapons all over the field, but none of them are as important as running back Sunshine Anuenue. Anuenue is averaging 120.5 yards per game in his last two contests after being bottled up by Kapaa in the opener. The Golden […]

Test gets even tougher for Campbell

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

With Campbell in such a slump, it’s easy to forget what coach Amosa Amosa has done in Ewa Beach. The Sabers are 0-2 in the OIA Blue and fighting with rival Kapolei to stay out of the cellar. All they have to do to avoid that fate is beat unbeaten Kailua. Ouch. But it certainly can be done. Amosa has never lost to the Surfriders, instantly ending Kailua’s five game winning streak when he took over. How much of a […]

Say, Okimoto square off in Round 3

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Aiea coach Wendell Say and Farrington coach Randall Okimoto have been big names on the Hawaii coaching scene for so long, how is it possible that they have met on the field only twice? Say, the dean of OIA coaches, and Okimoto will face off for the third time in their careers on Friday. Say has been the head coach at Aiea since 1997 and Okimoto has run the Governors since 2000. It doesn’t portend good things for Say, whose […]

Waipahu’s Simanu to test Kaiser

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Looking at the schedule before the season, Kaiser coach Cameron Higgins knew he would be scheming against the OIA’s best receivers week after week. It is doubtful he thought he would see the best one this week. The struggling Cougars travel to Waipahu on Friday to face Andrew Simanu and the Marauders. Simanu is the surprise leader in OIA Red receiving, catching 18 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns through three games. Jordan Taylor, last year’s receiving leader for […]

Mules approaching must-win territory

By Jerry Campany on September 3, 2015

Last year Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda preached the process, saying that if they do the right things the wins will come. And they did. The Mules started 5-0, finished 6-2 and lost those two games by a touchdown or less. Tokuda hasn’t changed his stance this year, but the results are certainly different. The Mules visit Castle on Friday saddled with an 0-3 record and none of the final scores were close. Historically, Castle should be just what the doctor […]

York: Mililani on a business trip

By Nick Abramo on September 3, 2015

Mililani football head coach Rod York has a sense of humor, but it doesn’t really show up that often during football season. It’s not like he, the person, is all business all the time. But if the subject has to do with his Trojans football team, you can bet money that he’s dead serious about it. To him, the welfare of his team is of the utmost importance. Sometimes that welfare means discipline, like last week when he doled out […]

Mid-Pacific cultivates its own identity

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2015

As the years go by, Mid-Pacific has steadily moved ahead in forming its own athletic teams rather than have its athletes be part of the Pac-Five conglomerate. Pac-Five sports teams are made up of athletes from many different smaller Interscholastic League of Honolulu schools. Mid-Pacific is one of those schools and it has been well-known for being a huge part of Pac-Five for many years, but times are changing. Boys water polo is the latest sport which Mid-Pacific is offering […]
