Q&A: Rod York on life without Milton

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2015

On the topic of this season’s rash of injuries to quarterbacks, Mililani coach Rod York chatted with Hawaii Prep World on Monday night. His QB, all-state first-team selection McKenzie Milton, suffered a shoulder injury three weeks ago against Kailua. HPW: Kaysen Higa has played well since stepping into McKenzie’s role. Is he locked in as the starter even though he alternated with Dillon Gabriel this past weekend against Moanalua? York: Oh no, it’s open competition. It was going to be […]

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2015

St. Francis’ 12-9 win over Pac-Five at Aloha Stadium on Friday was one of the highlights of Week 9 in Hawaii high school football. It was the Saints’ first varsity victory in Interscholastic League of competition. The school started varsity football in the 2013 season. Radford’s OIA Division II regular-season title-clinching 28-7 win at Nanakuli on Friday was another biggie of Week 9, as was Kapaa’s KIF championship-clinching 28-0 win over Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium on Saturday. Week 9 scores of […]

‘Iolani’s Makekau day-to-day with injury

By Billy Hull on October 5, 2015

‘Iolani senior receiver Keoni-Kordell Makekau left last Friday’s 35-23 loss to Punahou early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury and is “day-to-day” according to ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look. Makekau was on the receiving end of the first two completed passes thrown by quarterback Tai-John Mizutani when he took a hit near the ‘Iolani sideline to his shoulder. He left the game and had his pads off by the second quarter and didn’t return. Makekau currently leads the ILH […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 30, Waianae 0, F

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2015

It’s No. 4 Kahuku (7-0, 6-0) against No. 6 Waianae (6-1, 6-0) in a showdown for first place in the OIA Red. Both teams have already sealed first-round byes in the OIA Division I playoffs. FIRST QUARTER Huuuge break for Waianae, recovering what was an pouchy (PK Tate Ebel with the recovery), but quick moving on-side kick. Brilliant. But then after getting the ball in its territory, they run, run, run and punt. I was hoping they’d go for a […]

Malepeai masterful, humble on record night

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2015

The hits keep coming, records keep falling. Vavae Malepeai remains the same. Mililani’s starting running back often gains yardage because of an offensive line that has played at an elite level dating back well before his first start as a sophomore in 2013. Malepeai does a lot of genius work between the tackles, as well, blasting through creases and canyons at the point of attack. Defenders unwilling to get into a low base are usually knocked over by Malepeai’s power. […]
