Kapolei’s Auwae opens up recruitment

By Hawaii Prep World on November 23, 2015

Kapolei senior offensive lineman Toleafoa Sean Auwae opened up his recruiting on Monday announcing on Twitter he is no longer committed to UCLA. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder was named to the All-OIA Blue first team last week after helping the Hurricanes advance to the OIA quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Kahuku to end the season. Auwae committed to UCLA in mid-August but took a trip to Vanderbilt during the weekend of the state football semifinals. Vanderbilt was one of […]

Kahuku vaults to No. 24 nationally

By Nick Abramo on November 22, 2015

Kahuku’s convincing 39-14 victory over Saint Louis for the state Division I championship helped the Red Raiders move up 90 spots to No. 24 in the MaxPreps national computer rankings released Sunday. The Red Raiders capped their 13-0 season on Friday at Aloha Stadium. They could go up or down from there, depending on how other top teams across the country fare as their seasons wind down. The Crusaders fell 77 spots to No. 113. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 […]

Another record-setting season in 2015

By Billy Hull on November 22, 2015

The 2015 Hawaii high school football season was quite a ride. When the final Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 rankings come out on Monday, Kahuku will surely end the season No. 1, meaning four different teams at some point held the top spot this season. That’s never happened in the history of the HSA poll. The season marked the end of the road for Mililani’s threesome of McKenzie Milton, Vavae Malepeai and Kalakaua Timoteo, who will all finish in the top […]

Bilyeu was top-notch in Kapaa’s loss

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2015

Linebacker Jonathan Bilyeu took his ballhawking skills to another level on Friday night, recovering two fumbles and intercepting a pass in Kapaa’s 30-16 Division II football state final loss to Radford on Friday at Aloha Stadium. He made life agonizingly difficult for the Rams (13-0) with those three plays in the first half that helped the Warriors build leads of 10-0 and 16-7. If the Warriors had pulled it out, they would have become only the second team from the […]

Kesi Ah-Hoy and a burst of rubber granules

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2015

Boy, have times changed. Cigar-smoking, fedora-wearing coaches long ago (or so we’ve heard) used to say things in a gruff voice, like “All we need is 3 yards every carry and we get a first down every four downs.” Young’uns’ eyes would sparkle as they admired the plain, brutal logic of that thinking and they would immediately be full-fledged, card-carrying members of that plan. Until, sometimes, they realize it’s easier said than done. For many, it would be three-and-out. For […]

Another memorable season in the books

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 21, 2015

Another prep football season is in the books with Kahuku and Radford capturing the Division I and Division II state championships Friday night. Defense was the common theme in the first OIA sweep since 2003 — when Kahuku and Aiea paired titles in the inaugural year of Division II — with the Red Raiders and Rams delivering stifling performances to punctuate their title seasons. Personally, the privilege of covering high school football weekends from early August to late November provided […]

Red Raiders stayed true to their DNA

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 21, 2015

Five Kahuku players took a turn at quarterback on Friday and the Red Raiders tossed in a couple of key wrinkles. But the front line remained the engine for the Red Raider offense in a drive to the Division I state championship. During the regular season, the Red Raiders committed to tucking in behind the offensive line and pounding out first downs — a mind-set first-year head coach Vavae Tata referred to on multiple occasions as staying true to the program’s […]

VIDEO: Kahuku blasts Saint Louis in title game

By Hawaii Prep World on November 21, 2015

Kahuku continued its dominance in the state championship era, claiming its eighth state title with a thunderous 39-14 win over Saint Louis on Friday at Aloha Stadium.
