Showcase format for Winner Circle/Trench Dawgz event

By Paul Honda on February 10, 2021

The players have been working out relentlessly. Consistently. In roughly one month, they’ll be heading to California for opportunity. The format created by host Winner Circle Athletics and football players from Hawaii will be similar to the PTP College Showcase held in Utah last fall. There will be no official game format, no score on the scoreboard, but the 1v1, 5v5, 7v7 and 11v11 battles will be fully padded, as they were in Utah. There will be no special teams […]

Leilehua’s Kalei Akagi ready for next chapter: West Point

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2021

On the gridiron, the speed, versatility and reliability of Kalei Akagi made him a Swiss Army knife for Leilehua’s offense. Little did Akagi know that more than a year after playing his unexpectedly last high school football game — in November of 2019 — he would literally become a member of the U.S. Military Academy. Akagi signed a letter of intent to play football for Army. West Point awaits. “I feel honored and blessed with this opportunity to further my […]

Kamehameha pitcher Momi Lyman heading to Whitworth

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2021

Haley “Momi” Lyman is an optimist with a diamond in her heart. The Kamehameha softball pitcher signed with Whitworth last week, securing her future destination. The Warriors saw their promising 2020 season derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lyman hasn’t given up on a 2021 spring sports calendar. “This year? I feel like we’ll still be able to have a season. It’ll be great since we didn’t have a (2020) season, and I’ll be able to play my last year,” she […]

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2021

Just like that, Hawaii and California are renewing their bond — and friendly rivalry — on the gridiron. Football training group Trench Dawgz has agreed to travel and meet Winner Circle Athletics, a rising football club in Southern California, in a “college showcase.” The combine and game are tentatively scheduled for March, Trench Dawgz Coach Whitley Fehoko said. Fehoko, a former Farrington standout, has trained the group of linemen for years. They have worked continuously through the COVID-19 pandemic, and […]

‘Iolani freshman Jolie Nguyen leads female harriers at MPI race

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2021

Jolie Nguyen says she’s little. The running world may see her quite differently. Running in her first high school cross country meet, Nguyen was a big hit. She posted the best girls time — varsity or junior varsity — 13 minutes, 28 seconds on the two-mile course at Mid-Pacific Institute on Saturday afternoon. Nguyen is only a freshman. She completed the hill-loaded course in the JV girls race. Another Raider freshman, Jaymie Frith, crossed the finish line in 13:54.7. The […]

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2021

Aiva Arquette scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Saint Louis routed Team X, 87-60, on Friday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium. It was a rematch of an earlier exhibition between the Crusaders and the club team, also won by the Crusaders. Jydon “Boogie” Hall also double-doubled with 22 points and 10 assists as Saint Louis improved to 6-0. The 6-foot-4 Arquette shot 10-for-14 from the field and nabbed three steals. Malu Ing tallied 18 points on 7-for-10 […]

Kamehameha pitcher Shaydan Lovediro crafts a path to Bushnell

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2021

2020 was nearly as minimal as it got for a team and a pitcher when the high school baseball season got cancelled. Shaydan Lovediro made the most of it as junior-varsity hurler. Kamehameha played three JV baseball games and was on track to join the varsity, eventually. As the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures across the country, the 6-foot, 220-pound senior didn’t get to pitch for the Warriors’ varsity squad, but he remained busy. One year later — 11 months, to […]
