Yamaguchi catching up on lost mat time

By Nick Abramo on January 23, 2016

Pomaikai Yamaguchi is trying her hardest to get in the best shape possible. The Kamehameha wrestler was a third-place finisher in the 125-pound class two years ago as a sophomore, but her junior campaign was wiped out by a knee injury at the Paani Challenge last year. On Friday at the Mid-Pacific gym in ILH duals, Yamaguchi — who has been wrestling at 132 and 138 this season — moved up to 145 to face Damien’s Tara Labanon. She pinned Labanon […]

New Radford head coach Passos looks ahead

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2016

Lon Passos had a bit of a chuckle when he was told we at Hawaii Prep World heard he was the new Radford football coach. He knows what he’s in for, and he’s looking forward to it. As outgoing coach Fred Salanoa knew during his 13 years at the helm, it can be an all-consuming task to coach a high school football program. “It’s a bigger job now,” said Passos with a little bit of of a ‘what am I […]

USC and other top colleges watch Tagovailoa

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2016

Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been practicing for a 7-on-7 passing tournament. Good thing he’s active at this time because some college suitors came to watch him practice over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Assistant coaches from USC and UCLA came to the Crusaders’ field on Monday to watch him throw, according to Tua’s father, Galu Tagovailoa. Because he’s still a junior, college coaches aren’t allowed at this time to talk to Tagovailoa or his family directly. […]

The Rough Riders, behind OIA East leading scorer Keala Quinlan (20.0 ppg), played their closest game back on Jan. 6 against the Govs, winning 54-48. That was the only game Quinlan, whose season-high is 31 points against Moanalua, […]

Radford girls are Sum10; Kailua something, too

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2016

You see fans holding signs at sporting events and scratch your head for a few seconds wondering what words mean and then it comes to you. “Radford is Sum10.” Perfect. Somet’en’ … Something. True. The Rams girls basketball team knew when to put its foot on the gas pedal in a 42-25 win over visiting Leilehua on Thursday night. The Mules had plenty of energy and hustle, but simply put, they couldn’t get good looks at the basket. Conversely, that […]

Hernandez on how June Jones joined Hurricanes

By Nick Abramo on January 21, 2016

Darren Hernandez might need a new phone or at least a new phone number. The Kapolei football head coach has been inundated by calls and messages the last two weeks since he announced on TV that June Jones would be joining the Hurricanes as the offensive coordinator for the 2016 season. “It’s been a crazy two weeks. So many people wanted to give well-wishes. I feel like chopped liver,” he joked via telephone Wednesday. So, how did what seemed impossible […]

Kato ascends to top of boys P4P

By Jerry Campany on January 20, 2016

Before last year’s state seeding meeting, state wrestling coordinator Carl Schroers made an impassioned plea to his fellow coaches to go to their athletic directors and demand a reduction in the number of weight classes in Hawaii. His argument, which was repeated at HIADA but shot down, was that wrestlers from the 50th state have enough challenges to join the nation’s best to take January off because of a lack of competition and that beating the same kids over and […]
