By Paul Honda on March 25, 2021

Maryknoll’s three-set win over ‘Iolani, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, was a big win for the Spartans and Coach Andrew Ah Yee. “The biggest plus is having Zion Bruce back. He added another big block to the front row. Together with Alex Parks, they both maintained the net,” Ah Yee said. “There are no surprises in our team because our boys worked hard this week executing and fine tuning our offense and defense. Later, at Hemmeter Fieldhouse, Punahou’s girls left their mark […]

Michigan makes offer to Liona Lefau, one of Kahuku’s Sammamish 5

By Paul Honda on March 25, 2021

The history of Polynesians venturing to the Northwest goes back a long way, dating at least back to the fur trade of the 19th century. The migration since includes a new chapter that includes several island players in Washington state, including Kahuku’s Liona Lefau, Zion Ah You, Zealand Matagi, Leonard Ah You and Waika Crawford now at Sammamish High School (Bellevue, Wash.) this spring. Last fall, several Hawaii student-athletes transferred to mainland schools, including a few from Kahuku Sammamish plays […]

By Paul Honda on March 24, 2021

The original plan was to stay in Heber City, Utah, for football season and take it one step at a time. Now, eight months after landing at Wasatch High School, Jarinn Kalama is a future BYU Cougar. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior committed to BYU on Wednesday. “I just feel like BYU would be a good fit for me,” said Kalama, who has added 10 pounds to his frame after a winter of weight training. By Paul Honda on March 23, 2021

A part of Tausili Akana wants to stay grounded. As in, grounded in his neighborhood of Hauula. The former Kamehameha student-athlete made a crucial move to Utah last summer, playing his sophomore season at Wasatch High School in Heber City. His stellar play for the 5A semifinalist team netted new offers from UNLV, Oregon State, Utah State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State during the 2020 fall season — while high school fall sports in Hawaii were postponed. In the winter, more […]

Transformer: Punahou’s Ryder Hsiung muscles up before heading to Willamette

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2021

The extra effort has defined Ryder Hsiung on and off the basketball court. Not even a global pandemic could change the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Punahou senior. Hsiung signed with Willamette University, which will get the benefit of the sharpshooter’s marksmanship. As a junior in 2019-20, he had his best scoring output against Saint Louis, splashing six 3-pointers en route to a 24-point performance. Before the game, when Coach Darren Matsuda opened the gym door at 2:30 p.m. for early shooting reps, […]
