Punahou 3, Mid-Pacific 1

The visiting Buffanblu — and winner of the last eight state championships — opened their season with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-10 win at the Owls’ Mills Gym.

Keau Thompson pounded 11 kills, Riley Haine had seven and Aidan Tune tallied six in the Buffanblu’s victory. Keegan Au Yuen had 20 assists. Punahou amassed four aces by Tune, Noa Haine, Riley Haine and Kahale Clini. Brighton Yap, Noa Haine and Jon Suh each had one block.

Punahou played reserves in the second set.

“It feels good to get back out there,” Buffanblu Coach Rick Tune said.


Reyn Miyazawa led MPI with 16 kills, two aces and one block. Caleb Law added seven kills, two aces and a block. Kalani Aona and Angelo Coluccio had one kill and one block apiece.

The Punahou-Kamehameha matchup on Thursday has the makings of another classic battle.

“It should be a fun match,” Coach Tune said. “They always have a lot of good talent and are well coached. This group of (Punahou) boys loves to compete, so I’m sure they are looking forward to it.”

GIRLS

Punahou 2, Mid-Pacific 0

Debbie Chun led the Owls with six kills, adding eight digs. Luna Suzuki tallied four kills and nine digs. Kalei Lyons, Makela Pick and Sarae Miguel each chipped in two kills.


MPI’s block leaders were Kalei Lions, Miguel and Suzuki with two apiece. Erin Goya led the Owls with 10 digs and added two assists. Setter Alyssa Muraoka had 14 assists, five digs and one ace, and Reese McDonald had three digs.

Izabel Rosario tallied an ace.

    Hi Paul!

    sorry i was just asking because the title of the article says ILH scores from Saturday. I know there was some D2 varsity volleyball games that also played that day. Damien vs La Pietra (girls) & Damien vs St. Louis (boys) and a few others. Thank you for you hard work! i’m super stoked the kids have a season!
