Waianae wins 1st girls volleyball title

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2016

There’s often been championship potential for Waianae volleyball. The boys found themselves in the spotlight several years ago, but maintaining that level of success is not easy. The girls? Thursday’s 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 sweep of Roosevelt in the OIA Division II final was an eye-opener. It is the first OIA volleyball championship for Waianae, even going back to the years of Thia Palakiko. Since the league began girls volleyball in 1971, the Seariders had not won a crown. This year’s […]

Kahuku all aces in OIA final

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2016

For awhile, let’s say half of the opening set, ShaRae Niu simply looked like a setter par excellence. Left side, right side, middle, middle and more middle to Phoebe Grace. Regular sets, and later quick sets, quick back sets, whatever was needed, Niu delivered. But then there was this: Kahuku won its 19th OIA girls volleyball championship not just on Niu’s smooth dimes, and not just with great offensive balance or even a terrific, persistent block. Kahuku’s serve was thundering, […]

Kahuku leaves no doubt for 12th OIA crown

By Jerry Campany on October 20, 2016

The Kahuku girls volleyball team finished a perfect OIA season with another fitting sweep. The Red Raiders, who have not lost a set all season, beat Mililani 25-15, 25-15, 25-17 for their 12th OIA championship and first since 2012. Mililani, the top seed out of the West, left it all on the floor but there was little doubt the Red Raiders, the top ranked team in the Star-Advertiser poll since the preseason, would roll. The victory gives the East side […]

By Hawaii Prep World on October 20, 2016

Before Kamehameha attempts to defend its Division I state girls volleyball title, the Warriors had something they wanted back. Kamehameha reclaimed the ILH girls volleyball championship with a 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18 win over Punahou on Thursday evening at Kekuhaupio Gym. The victory gave the Warriors, ranked No. 2 in the state behind Kahuku, their 19th overall ILH title and seventh under current head coach Chris Blake. Kamehameha was the two-time defending ILH champion in 2015 when it lost to […]

Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

Lee hopes to coach Friday prior to surgery

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2016

He’s been a healthy, strong person for all his life. That’s why Cal Lee’s health issue is shocking for his staff, players and fans across the state. Lee missed last week’s game between his Saint Louis Crusaders and ‘Iolani because of kidney stones. The longtime football coach is taking medication to heal an infection in the kidneys, and is scheduled to have surgery next week (Oct. 28). “The stone is too big,” he said on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not going […]

Milton talks about UCF’s 2 tough losses

By Nick Abramo on October 19, 2016

Former Mililani star quarterback McKenzie Milton told members KnightNews.com that he expects UCF to be a better team toward the end of the season and that the reason the Knights have lost two games in bitter, last-play fashion is that they simply “did not finish.” UCF (3-3) lost 26-25 at home to Temple on Saturday on the last play of the game. On Sept. 17, the Knights had plenty of chances to close out the game but lost to Maryland […]

‘Puns’ vs. ‘Saints’ a Top 10 national game

By Nick Abramo on October 19, 2016

The Punahou vs. Saint Louis football game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium is considered a Top 10 game nationally by CBS MaxPreps. The winner will be the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and likely earn a better seeding and a bye in the first round of the inaugural Open division state tournament. Punahou (7-1) topped Saint Louis (7-1) 33-20 at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 29 to even the season series at 1-1. The Crusaders beat the Buffanblu 64-44 on […]
