HAWAII GROWN: All-America honors for 5

By Billy Hull on December 14, 2016

A total of five players with Hawaii ties earned All-America honors from the AVCA today. Along with Hawaii outside hitter Nikki Taylor, a Kaiser graduate, Utah junior Adora Anae was named to the AVCA All-America second team. Anae, a Kahuku alumna, is just the second Utah volleyball player to earn second-team All-America honors ever. Also named to the AVCA All-Pacific South Region team just last week, Anae set a single-season school record with 592 kills, which ranked first in the […]

No. 3 ‘Iolani playing with remarkable precision

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

The ‘Iolani Raiders, with a ton of returnees and great chemistry, might be playing basketball better than any team in the state. While Maryknoll is unbeaten, the tall, long, No. 1 Lady Spartans have their lulls — typical of a team stocked with juniors. Konawaena is at No. 2, but the Wildcats are figuring things out with a roster of new players to go with three returning starters. It is ‘Iolani, still undersized whether it’s against the nation’s best teams […]

Amosa: Campbell going ‘in different direction’

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

After nine years at his dream coaching gig, the era of Amosa Amosa as Campbell football coach has come to a close. Here is the full story in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Amosa got the news today, stepping down after Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes indicated that the program “will go in a different direction.” The Sabers, who finished second in the OIA Blue (Division I) during the regular season, lost to Farrington in the league playoffs. Campbell reached the […]

Maryknoll supplants Kona, SHA gets little respect

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

The tumble downhill can be unnerving. The bumps and bruises, the strawberries and scratches when a No. 1 team, a defending champion, finds itself no longer in the stratosphere of immortals. To err is to be human and, boy, are the Konawaena Wildcats human. A year removed from the supernatural career of Chanelle Molina (Washington State), the Wildcats came to the ‘Iolani Classic 7-0 with two titles in hand after winning tournaments at Lahainaluna and Waiakea. However, there was barely […]

Punahou still No. 1, St. Francis climbs to 5th

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2016

Boys hoops is deeper than it has been in some time. The girls side has roughly 12-14 competitive teams, and by that I mean, teams that play sound basketball and can beat each other, given the right circumstances and a bit of peak performance. The boys side is much less predictable, with around 16-18 teams in a generally separate echelon. Here’s a look at today’s Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 along with my ballot positions of each team. 1. Punahou […]

Quack Attack: Oregon offers Taulia

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2016

It was a formality since the visit of new Oregon head football coach Willie Taggart to the home of brothers Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa over the weekend. Today, the Ducks offered Taulia Tagovailoa a scholarship while Florida threw an offer Tua’s way according to Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez. Oregon is where one of Tua’s mentors, former All-State quarterback Marcus Mariota of Saint Louis became a Heisman Trophy winner before being drafted by the Tennessee Titans. Tua just completed his senior […]

HAWAII GROWN: Herbig an All-American

By Billy Hull on December 12, 2016

Stanford offensive line Nate Herbig, who graduated from Saint Louis seven months ago, was named to the ESPN.com true freshman All-America team on Monday. In the write-up, ESPN’s Tom Luginbill writes, “A tough, physical player in a scheme that freshman often struggle to be tough enough to succeed, Herbig found a way to make it work at left guard.” Herbig started the last five games of the season for the Cardinal, who went 5-0. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 350 pounds, […]

Tagovailoa named Gatorade POY

By Jerry Campany on December 12, 2016

The awards keep coming for Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa, who led the Crusaders to the Open Division state championship this year, was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the Hawaii football season. Tagovailoa is now able to select a national or youth sports organization to donate $1,000 to and can up the haul to $10,000 if he is the national winner of an essay contest. Tagovailoa, who is committed to Alabama, will be able to select […]
