Senior-heavy Kapolei baseball squad aiming ‘to win it all’

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2021

Micah Banton is a coach and counselor. Sometimes, many times, the two roles intertwine. In the midst of a global pandemic, Kapolei’s second-year head baseball coach has spent much of the past year merging work and passion. “It’s about getting exposure. That’s why I was hell bent on getting these kids to college,” Banton said on Thursday before the Hurricanes hit the practice field. “I was calling coaches, making videos. I was on a mission to make that happen.” Banton […]

Big second-set rally leads to Kamehameha’s sweep of Punahou

By Paul Honda on April 15, 2021

The evolution happens every season in the ILH. One team takes a lead. The rest are forced to adapt and survive. Or fade away. Kamehameha’s 25-18, 26-24 win over previously unbeaten Punahou on Thursday night begins a new chapter in the rivalry between the two girls volleyball powerhouse programs. With the key win, the Warriors moved into a first-place tie with the previously unbeaten Buffanblu at 5-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings. “For us I think it was […]

Battery tested: Maryknoll ace Ua Nakoa-Chung and catcher Lilliana Thomas in sync

By Paul Honda on April 14, 2021

Trust is a valuable commodity. Its partner is action, and the two together create something unbeatable. When Liliana Thomas calls a pitch, the Arizona State-bound catcher puts all her knowledge and instinct on the line. The greatest beneficiary is ace Ua Nakoa-Chung, who put together her best performance of the young season on Wednesday. Maryknoll’s 12-0, TKO win over ‘Iolani in five innings wasn’t a surprise offensively, but Nakoa-Chung was sterling with nine strikeouts in her one-hitter. She walked just […]

By Paul Honda on April 13, 2021

2-6-5. It may never happen again in years. Decades. The last time Kirt Miyahira saw it, he was a coach at Mililani. Yet, his ‘Iolani Raiders work on the unusual defensive play fairly often. On Wednesday, clinging to a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning at Mid-Pacific, the Raiders were ready. Mostly ready. Runners at second and first, one out. The potential tying run. The potential winning run. Jake Comeaux squares up to bunt. His attempt send […]
