‘Iolani junior Makani Tanaka comes through in comeback win over Damien

By Paul Honda on April 24, 2021

Seven of his teammates are preparing to play college baseball next season, so Makani Tanaka just might be among the best No. 8 hitters in any ILH lineup. The 6-foot-2 left-handed junior had a day on Friday, tying the game with a two-run triple in the second inning, and contributing to ‘Iolani’s go-ahead fifth inning with an RBI single. The Raiders’ 6-3 comeback win over Damien was tougher than the final score might indicate. Tanaka took it all in stride. […]

By Paul Honda on April 22, 2021

There was a time not long ago when Roosevelt’s gym still had “half moon” backboards. Those days are long gone, but modern amenities in the old building are coming. Sen. Brian Taniguchi announced on Wednesday that $18 million in funding has been approved for a new gym at the school. That allows the plan to include underground parking. “The initial funding was available two years ago, $19 million, but you still have to do the planning and design. We found […]

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu has ruled that Maryknoll’s 12-0 TKO win over ‘Iolani on Apr. 14 — exactly one week ago — is now a forfeiture. It goes in the books as a 2-0 loss. The ruling involves pitcher Ua Nakoa-Chung, who had returned from a showcase tournament in Las Vegas on Apr. 12, a Monday. Allie Capello’s return is a game changer for ‘Iolani

Just like that, the gauntlet is back in full operation. The return of three starters, including junior Allie Capello, lifted ‘Iolani to a 13-7 win over Kamehameha on Monday. The jolt into the Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball standings is measurable. Kamehameha was unbeaten before the weekend, and has since lost to Maryknoll and ‘Iolani. Though Maryknoll (5-0) has a vice grip on first place, the Raiders have regained momentum. The missing starters were out for roughly two weeks. Part […]
