HAWAII GROWN: Tua shines in spring game

By Billy Hull on April 22, 2017

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa is the clear-cut No. 2 quarterback on the Crimson Tide depth chart and made a case Saturday he’s looking to move up even higher. Tagovailoa, the Saint Louis alum and reigning Honolulu Star-Advertiser player of the year who enrolled early and could still be in high school if he chose to do so, wowed the crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Alabama’s annual A Day spring football game with touchdown passes on his first two drives. Tagovailoa, who […]

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball championship game between Kamehameha and Saint Louis has been postponed to Monday, 3:30 p.m. The game site will be Ala Wai Field. The game has been pushed back three times due to inclement weather causing soggy conditions at different sites. Today’s game had been scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at Ala Wai. The ILH D-II title game was played there on Friday. Muddy conditions on the mound played a part in the game, […]

Cortez’s ironman effort leads Damien to states

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2017

St. Francis had almost every right to claim the league title and the one state-tournament berth. The defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II champion was just one win away from returning to the state tourney and had to beat a Damien team it beat three times to start the regular season. Damien’s amazing run to the tourney title, then beating St. Francis twice for the league championship, was textbook and a fairy tale all in one. With Friday’s 2-1, […]

Solomua sets tone for state-bound Waipahu

By Paul Honda on April 21, 2017

On a team of young players, a senior like Jeminae Solomua is more than a starting outside hitter. Solomua sets the tone. After pounding 16 kills in a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of Kaiser in the OIA boys volleyball quarterfinals on Wednesday, coach Julna Pasicaran made it clear. “Jeminae is their leader. The boys follow his lead,” Pasicaran said. “He’s a role model, involved with school government and he has good grades.” That’s a big title to place on any […]

OIA, ILH softball games rained out

By Hawaii Prep World on April 21, 2017

The wet weather island-wide has continued to make the lives of softball and baseball schedulers miserable. Both OIA softball quarterfinal games postponed on Thursday were again postponed on Friday. Mililani and Moanalua will attempt to play that game on Saturday at Moanalua at 3 p.m. Kapolei and Pearl City will try to get their game played at Sand Island at 10 a.m. The OIA Division II quarterfinal game between Radford and Waialua is being played today. Also, Mid-Pacific and ‘Iolani […]

Originally scheduled for Thursday before moving to today, the game has now been moved to Ala Wai Field on Saturday morning at 10 due to unplayable field conditions at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai. Kalani’s Manta reflects on epic OIA title battle

By Nick Abramo on April 20, 2017

Kalani’s Miki Manta was the reigning Oahu Interscholastic Association girls golf champion on Monday, but by late Tuesday afternoon that title was gone. It was swept away by her fierce rival in the sport, Kaiser’s Malia Nam. Turtle Bay was the site of what can aptly be described as an incredible performance by both players. No hyperbole there, either. It took a while for us to reach Manta and get her thoughts about her one-shot loss, but we did and […]

Punahou’s Corpuz dug deep to win ILH title

By Paul Honda on April 20, 2017

Time flies when you’re having fun. Fun for fans. Sheer competition on the court. It was only a few minutes into the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls tennis championship match between top-seeded Katreina Corpuz (Punahou) and third-seeded Taylor Lau (St. Francis) when it was absolutely clear this would be a long, drawn-out, sometimes excruciating duel. The first name, Corpuz notes, is pronounced “like the hurricane,” which she often played like on Wednesday. Was it the best match of the year? […]
