SPRING FOOTBALL: Hawaii boys excel

By Nick Abramo on April 26, 2017

The recent spring reports in Hawaii Prep World about Hawaii-bred quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa at Alabama and McKenzie Milton at UCF have been highly positive. They are not the only football players from the Hawaii recruiting class of 2016 (or in Tagovailoa’s case: early 2017) making strides this spring on the mainland. Newspaper Internet sites and other special websites have glowing reports about them. The 2016 high school graduates didn’t enroll at their respective schools until the fall, so many are […]

Crusaders new No. 1; Chargers still at top

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2017

Saint Louis captured the ILH baseball tournament title and then won the ILH overall championship with recent 8-5 and 5-1 wins over Kamehameha, and the Crusaders are the new No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll released Tuesday. The Crusaders also earned the top seed in this week’s Division I state tournament. The Warriors fell to No. 3, behind OIA champion Kailua, which stayed at No. 2 in the poll and also earned the state’s second seed. The softball […]

Dueling to Infinity: Peanut Butter and Cervantes

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

There will never be another Peanut Butter and there may never be another Pearl City softball team quite like this bunch. With a 1-0 victory over Campbell in the OIA semifinals on Monday at McKinley Softball Stadium, even Chargers coach Chad Obara admitted to a new experience of his own. “This is the first time I actually jumped up and celebrated,” he said. Obara and the team in classic white and purple certainly earned that right. The double no-hitter through […]

Movin’ on up: Mililani’s manic Monday

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

On the same day U.S. News and World Report rated Roosevelt above Mililani as the best public high school in the state, Mililani made a statement on the diamond with a 9-2 win over Roosevelt in the OIA softball semifinals at McKinley Softball Stadium. The Lady Trojans’ seven-run surge in the top of the seventh inning broke open what had been a sensible defensive battle between two solid pitchers: Mililani’s Misha Carreira and Roosevelt’s Jaeda Cabunoc. Through six innings, Cabunoc […]

Q&A: Waipahu spiker Jeminae Solomua

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

His mother, Lani Solomua, heard the name Gemini while watching a TV show one day. That’s all it took. When he was born, Jeminae Solomua was destined to become a star. The Waipahu three-sport student-athlete is the power behind Waipahu’s explosion in OIA boys volleyball. The Marauders sealed a state-tournament berth last week with a win over Kaiser. Solomua chatted with Hawaii Prep World before Waipahu plays Mililani in the OIA semifinals tonight and was featured in Tuesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. […]

Saint Louis wins ILH title and No. 1 seed

By Billy Hull on April 24, 2017

Saint Louis coach George Gusman planned to use all three of his starting pitchers in Monday’s ILH championship game against Kamehameha at Ala Wai Community Park. He then watched left-hander Dawson Yamaguchi paint a 1-2 fastball on the inside corner to strike out Kamehameha leadoff hitter Kawai Takemura and those plans immediately went out the window. Yamaguchi took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Kamehameha for the second time in nine days and combined with Dylan Lum on a […]

LIVE BLOG: Kamehameha vs. Saint Louis

By Billy Hull on April 24, 2017

It was supposed to take place Thursday in Waipahu, then Friday in Hawaii Kai and eventually Saturday at Ala Wai. After three different postponements, and with the state tournament beginning in less than 48 hours, No. 1 Saint Louis and No. 3 Kamehameha will finally determine who the outright ILH champion is with a game at Ala Wai Field beginning at 3 p.m. The winner has two full days off before a state quarterfinal game on Thursday. The loser? Despite […]
