Gridiron rivalry renewed: Saint Louis, Punahou and joy of football

By Paul Honda on May 2, 2021

Scrimmage, yes, but Saint Louis and Punahou have a special intensity any time they gather on the gridiron. For the first time since the fall of 2019 the two programs met, and the level of skill, speed and physicality were a spectacle. Football has been sorely missed. “We got to see all the young guys play. Seniors got to play and wrap up their year,” Saint Louis coach Ron Lee said. “Kids are so happy we had this. I feel […]

By Paul Honda on May 1, 2021

The lines are the same, but nothing else is. The same theme seems to repeat at OIA softball games, but for seven innings, the Pearl City chargers refused to yield. They competed until, literally, their final out in a 4-3 comeback win over Kapolei on Friday. Lainey Honma’s speed and hustle turned a ground ball into an infield single, allowing the visiting Chargers to score the tying run in the top of the seventh. Two crucial errors in the inning […]

By Paul Honda on April 30, 2021

The rain fell at 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday and would not stop. Not for game time, 3 p.m., and certainly not for the rest of the afternoon on the bucolic slope of Kailua’s baseball field. The game was made up by Thursday afternoon under a sunny sky. The lush foliage in view from home plate is the best of both worlds for all baseball and nature lovers. The base paths, though, didn’t heal themselves from the downpour. When the ponding […]

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2021

All Koby Moananu wanted was an opportunity. He is getting one at Oregon State. The Beavers football program extended a Preferred Walk On spot to the Kaimuki senior just two days after Utah made a similar offer. Moananu opted for Oregon State, where he plans to try out for the baseball team, too. “I committed to them on Monday. They sent the graphic today and I sent it to coach David,” he said, referring to Kaimuki football coach David Tautofi. […]

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2021

Washington, LSU, Wisconsin and the list keeps growing for Tausili Akana. Akana hasn’t played a down of football on island turf since the fall of 2019 as a freshman at Kamehameha. But LSU and Washington have kept a close watch on the 6-foot-4, 225-pound sophomore. Washington offered last Friday. “There are a good number of Polynesian athletes from Hawaii. I got to speak with some of them. They are doing well and loving their experience. These are guys I look […]

Nive Tuileta’s roof ends Le Jardin’s wild playoff win over Mid-Pacific

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2021

The Mid-Pacific Owls were in one of the strangest, happiest predicaments of the time warp known as the ILH girls volleyball spring 2021 season. Despite four out-of-rotation violations in the third and deciding set, fifth-seeded Mid-Pacific served on match point, leading 24-23 against the home team, fourth-seeded Le Jardin. Then, the unthinkable happened again. Another rotation violation, their fifth of the third set, gave the Bulldogs another free point, tying the set at 24. “I know a lot of us […]

Indiana Fever waives Chanelle Molina

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2021

If timing is everything, it just wasn’t the right time for Chanelle Molina. The Indiana Fever waived the former Konawaena and Washington State standout on Monday, ending her brief time with the WNBA franchise. An ankle injury derailed her attempt to make the Fever roster. Molina was in a training camp contract, still not 100 percent after injuring her right ankle during the Swedish Basketball League season. Then she reinjured the ankle last week during a Fever workout. With the […]
