Kauai’s comeback: A spike, an ejection and a gift

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2017

Even with one of the oddest comebacks in state-tournament baseball history, the Division II state title game between Kauai and Damien was a classic. Good defense. Kauai turned three double plays in the first three innings. Good pitching. Red Raiders pitchers Jacob Borrero and Keoua Sibayan kept a hot Damien attack — 25 runs in two earlier tourney games — relatively subdued. In the end, Kauai’s 5-4 comeback win, which included two runs in the top of the seventh inning, […]

Maryknoll softball breaks through

By Brian McInnis on April 29, 2017

Maryknoll softball had never won a state championship nor an Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. After a thrilling seven-inning slugfest on Kamehameha’s damp field on Friday, that resume needs updating. The Spartans claimed their first league crown with a 12-10 win over the Warriors, earning them the ILH’s seeded berth into states next week. Queen’s “We Are The Champions” blared from the visitors’ section on the Kapalama lower campus softball field. UPDATE: The HHSAA softball bracket was released. Maryknoll is […]

Mililani is No. 1 seed in state softball

By Hawaii Prep World on April 29, 2017

OIA champion Mililani and ILH champion Maryknoll are the top two seeds in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships that begin Wednesday. KS-Hawaii is the top seed in Division II. The Division I bracket should look familiar, as 10 of the 12 teams have been in the field for the past two years. Mililani leads the way with its 25th consecutive appearance, followed by two-time defending champion Campbell in the tournament for the 12th straight year and Kamehameha in for the […]

ILH track notes: an extraordinary relay bond

By Nick Abramo on April 29, 2017

They might need a name for their band soon because they’re playing some solid music on the track and field stage. It’s Punahou’s 4-x-100-meter girls squad. And here they come to the big stage. The girls – juniors Alialani Yamafuji and Kealoha Scullion, and sophomores Stevie Marvin and Kaylie Klausing – continue to improve and who knows how far they can take it. A year ago at the state meet, they ran to first place in 50.64 seconds. In the […]

ILH repeat judo champs led by ‘Iolani’s Yamashiro

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2017

Judo isn’t quite the kind of sport that takes to high schools across the nation. The sport requires immense self-control, sacrifice, emotional shackling to a point, even. Take a pounding, practice being thrown, zip that mouth instead of yapping in victory or defeat — it’s not an easy hand-to-hand combat activity for most teenagers, let alone adults, to conquer. And yet, there’s ‘Iolani’s Dane Yamashiro, winning his fourth Interscholastic League of Honolulu individual championship. There’s Punahou’s Taryn Ichimura, capturing the […]

Waiakea, Maui are last 2 standing

By Billy Hull on April 28, 2017

Raise your hand if you had Waiakea and Maui playing for the Division I title in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships. If your hand is in the air, you probably should head to Las Vegas. The Warriors, with their pitching, and the Sabers, with their hitting, have vanquished the top teams in the state to get to the first all-Neighbor Island final since Waiakea beat Baldwin in 2012. Waiakea (17-2), which lost two straight to Hilo in the […]

Q&A: Mililani’s Niino, captains Fuiava, Guillermo

By Paul Honda on April 28, 2017

Roughly 12 hours after the Mililani Trojans won their first OIA boys volleyball championship in 23 years, head coach Trenton Niino, senior outside hitter Sila Fuiava and sophomore setter Chance Guillermo were kind enough to do a Q&A with Hawaii Prep World. Fuiava had 17 kills in a five-set upset win over six-time defending league champion Moanalua. Guillermo dished out 45 assists with four kills and three blocks. They go huge performances by key role players like middle Andrew Valladeres […]

ILH champ Damien rolls into state final

By Billy Hull on April 28, 2017

The way the Damien Monarchs are rolling at the plate right now, the wait for Saturday’s 4 p.m. Division II state title game will feel quite long. After beating St. Francis four consecutive times to steal the ILH title and berth in the state tournament, the Monarchs have kept it going over the last two days, totaling 25 runs in 11 innings to advance to their first state baseball final in school history. Left fielder Akila Arecchi went 3-for-4 with […]
