Adding slider made Yamaguchi a master ace

By Paul Honda on June 4, 2017

The season chugged along, a gauntlet of merciless forays in the wickedly difficult Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Sure, Mid-Pacific was extremely young. They could take down a seasoned foe by meticulous means. ‘Iolani? Very scary, particularly for any opponent who considered the Raiders a peg down from the top. At that peak level, it was Saint Louis, Punahou and Kamehameha vying for not just an ILH crown, but a state-tournament berth. During that crescendo to the finish, the teams with […]

The complete 2017 All-State baseball teams were released in Sunday’s newspaper. Jio was steady and occasionally spectacular on the field, at the plate and on the basepaths as Maui rose from unseeded entrant to state champion at the […]

A four-time ILH champion, Yamashiro was […]

By the time Tua Tagovailoa took the field for his final high school game, he’d amassed an array of accolades to rival any in the line of Saint Louis quarterbacks before him — with one defining exception. Tagovailoa had won the starting job as a sophomore, his undeniable physical skills paired […]

HALL PASS: Seabury Hall’s Ava Shipman

By Paul Honda on June 3, 2017

Over the next 24 hours, Hawaii Prep World and the Star-Advertiser will release 12 small features on the 2017 inductees into the Hall of Honor ahead of Sunday’s ceremony. The going doesn’t get tough at Makawao. It already IS tough, every day, running on a campus that exists on hills. Ava Shipman’s dreams didn’t come crashing down the day she finished second in the state cross country championships. Her senior season began with that heartbreak, however, and rather than douse […]
