The struggle of shrinking football programs

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2017

The first two weeks of the prep football season offered a mix of questions and validation of the superpowers in the ILH and OIA. Neighboring rivals Mililani and Leilehua meet for battle on Friday night, and traditional rivals Kahuku and Waianae tussle on the Leeward Coast. Division II gets quite a spotlight, as well, when 1) Damien hosts a mainland school at what is now the busiest football hub in town, Skippa Diaz Stadium, and 2) Aloha Stadium hosts an […]

Waianae FINALLY gets Kahuku at home

By Billy Hull on August 17, 2017

Last year before the regular season game between then-No. 1 Kahuku and Waianae, we wrote about the long rivalry between the two schools. Kahuku vs. Waianae: The Crunch Bowl? Since then, Kahuku went on to win its 25th OIA championship, extending its lead over Waianae, which has 18. Kahuku also beat Waianae in the OIA playoffs, making it 17 straight wins against the Seariders. Maybe even more impressive is the four straight shutouts Kahuku has logged against Waianae. You have […]

HAWAII GROWN: Milton winning QB job at UCF

By Billy Hull on August 16, 2017

Central Florida’s McKenzie Milton, a 2016 Mililani alumnus who has been competing with two freshmen for the starting quarterback job in camp, appears to have won it. UCF coach Scott Frost held a press conference after practice on Wednesday and while he stopped short of saying Milton would definitely start the first game of the season against FIU on Aug. 31, he made it pretty clear Milton is the leader moving forward. “Through the course of practice, McKenzie has clearly […]

Kaiser forfeits; OIA tweaks this week’s slate

By Nick Abramo on August 15, 2017

The Kaiser High School varsity football team is forfeiting its game Saturday against Radford. Lon Passos, the Radford coach, said Tuesday that his Rams (0-1) will not be in action this week due to Kaiser’s decision. A source at Kaiser confirmed it. This will be Kaiser’s second league forfeit in a row and the third straight week the Cougars (who will be 0-2) were unable to field a team with enough players to safely play a game. Kaiser forfeited last […]

Saint Louis is unanimous No. 1

By Billy Hull on August 14, 2017

The final voter to keep Saint Louis out of the top spot has finally been swayed. Wins over two teams that qualified for the state tournament last year by a combined score of 110-7 will do that as the Crusaders have opened the 2017 season looking vastly superior to the rest of the field in the state. Saint Louis earned all 10 first-place votes and is the unanimous No. 1 team in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser football top 10 released […]

Week 2 recap: Hilo makes most of trip

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2017

Week 2 of the Hawaii High School football season is in the books, and there were some interesting, telling outcomes. Unranked Hilo came to Oahu and handily secured a 62-35 victory over ‘Iolani at Eddie Hamada Field on Saturday. The Raiders opened the season as the 10th-ranked team in the state before falling out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 last week. The Vikings may have a case to enter the poll, which will be released around Noon on Monday. […]

‘Iolani volleyball makes statement

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2017

In all the years of the prestigious early season Ann Kang Invitational — since 1989 — the host ‘Iolani Raiders had never come away with the first-place trophy. That is, until this weekend. ‘Iolani’s three-set win over Oak Ridge (Texas), 25-18, 21-25, 15-9, in the championship game on Saturday afternoon essentially served notice to the rest of the state that the defending HHSAA champs are still a force. Regular contender Punahou was also in the Ann Kang field, losing in […]
