Warriors crisp and sharp in sweep of Buffanblu

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

The only thing that really didn’t go right for longtime Kamehameha girls volleyball coach Chris Blake was his post-match dinner. He showed up at Rainbow Drive In on Thursday night, in need of his favorite: chili plate. The bad news: sold out. That’s one of the few things that haven’t gone well for the physics instructor on or off the court. His program is still elite, ranked No. 2 in the state, but with Punahou and top-ranked ‘Iolani right there […]

Throw rankings out for ILH opener

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

Wins and losses are all that really matter to title contenders in the ILH, and if the names are removed, is there really much difference between the state’s No. 1 team (and defending champion) and the squad ranked No. 5? Team A Wins: Farrington (34-15), at Lahainaluna (34-10), Carson (33-10). Team B Wins: at Waianae (49-7), Baldwin (61-0). Which team is which? Team A is Kamehameha, currently 3-0 and gaining momentum with each rousing victory. The struggles of a young […]

Cordeiro steps out of the shadows

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

One thing Crusaders’ quarterback Chevan Cordeiro does exceedingly well is pick his spots and gravitate to open space when passing routes are siphoned off. This is the rest of tremendous preparation, and he clearly learned his trade by working next to Tua Tagovailoa every day. Cordeiro is deceptively fast, able to chew off gains of 5 to 10 yards consistently. Kamehameha’s response tonight when the two teams meet in the ILH opener for both teams may be to tag a […]

Front line fuels Kamehameha’s offense

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2017

Kamehameha’s offensive line is developing into one of the best in the state. There were issues in a preseason scrimmage against Kahuku, but that turned into a lesson the Warriors have learned well from. But how will they fare against a Saint Louis front seven that includes defensive lineman Faatui Tuitele and linebacker Noa Purcell tonight at Aloha Stadium? Kamehameha’s offense has become more and more balanced, allowing Thomas Yam to do more managing than scrambling. They’ll smash, Yam will […]
