Kalani chalks up invigorating win in Washington

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2017

Kalani will head into the stretch run on a high note after its 19-9 victory over Mount Tahoma in Tacoma, Wash., on Friday. The Falcons (3-2, 2-2 Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II) are fighting for a playoff spot and are still in the chase for the title in what is always a rough-and-tumble league. As with most teams traveling to the mainland and getting a victory, it’s a win-win for Kalani. The team toured five colleges during the week — […]

No. 4 Mililani orchestrates an eye-opening victory

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2017

One glance at the Mililani offensive line in pregame warmups set off a little bit of an alarm for Farrington coach Randall Okimoto on Friday night. “I was concerned, looking at that offensive line, especially,” Okimoto said after the fourth-ranked Trojans stopped his sixth-ranked Governors 42-6 at Skippa Diaz Stadium. “I saw those names. I recognize those names — (Ikaika) Lafaele, (Noah) Williams. I played with Williams’ dad. We had a Lafaele over here. You see them and you know […]

Leilehua’s McGary gets emotional win over Castle

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 9, 2017

Rules are rules, and because James McGary missed practices this week the Leilehua junior sat out the first quarter of the Mules’ game at Castle on Friday. But in this case, the absences were not only excused, they were ordered. As the Mules rode the momentum of an overtime win over Kapolei, McGary was going through an emotional week with his mother scheduled to deploy to the Middle East in the coming days. “I said, ‘you miss practice, you stay […]

Waipahu celebrates new field in style

By Christian Shimabuku on September 9, 2017

The fans showed up to Waipahu’s first game on campus since 2015, almost enough to fill the stands on Friday night. So the Marauders returned the favor, giving their town the performance of a true OIA Division II contender in a 63-7 rout of Waialua. “We just came out here and wanted to give this game to the community. We didn’t have a game for two years on this field and it’s just a blessing to get back on here,” […]

Aina-Chaves explodes to St. Francis rushing mark

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2017

It was another career day for Jonan “Bubba” Aina-Chaves. It probably won’t be the last time, either. The sophomore running back had already set an amazing precedent by rushing for 209 yards in a win at Konawaena on Aug. 19. On Friday afternoon, he went one step beyond with 215 rushing yards on 27 carries, scoring four TDs in the Saints’ 43-26 win at ‘Iolani. This wasn’t yardage in a blowout win. ‘Iolani crept back into the contest, to no […]

Kaimuki ready to face the top contenders in D-II

By Billy Hull on September 8, 2017

Wins over Roosevelt and McKinley — a combined 2-7 in OIA Division II play — doesn’t seem like anything to write home about. For Kaimuki coach David Tautofi, however, they were much more challenging than it looked on paper. “We got past the two games that was a big concern to me — Roosevelt and McKinley,” Tautofi said after Friday’s 42-6 victory over the Tigers at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. “When you’re playing a team that doesn’t have such a good record, you […]
