Upsets not hard to find in OIA first round

By Jerry Campany on October 4, 2017

This year, OIA teams are going to have to earn it. Last year, in the first edition of the open state championship, each of the four schools that won their opening round games in the OIA playoffs (Moanalua, Farrington, Waianae and Leilehua) eventually made it to the state tournament. Before last year, the last time a program played in the first round of the OIA tournament and went on to the state tournament was Leilehua in 2007. With the OIA […]

Arizona State defensive back Joey Bryant, a 2009 Saint Louis alumnus, will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury during practice last Tuesday. Bryant, who started the first three games of the season, had 15 tackles and is still the only Sun Devil to record both a sack and an interception this season. Arizona State coach Todd Graham confirmed the ACL tear to reporters after Saturday’s 34-24 loss to Stanford. Bryant told the Star-Advertiser last Tuesday […]

By Billy Hull on October 3, 2017

Central Florida quarterback McKenzie Milton finished 19-for-31 for 253 yards and three touchdowns and added 88 rushing yards on 11 carries in the Knights’ 40-13 win over Memphis on Saturday. UCF snuck into the Associated Press Top 25 this week at No. 25, marking its first appearance since winning the Fiesta Bowl to close out the 2013 season ranked No. 10. “We can’t buy into the hype,” Milton, a 2016 Mililani graduate, told reporters after Saturday’s win. “You can’t get […]

Q&A: Kalaheo cross country burner Colby Otero

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2017

Colby Otero is the OIA Eastern Division cross country champion and there may very well be more accolades in store. The Kalaheo senior’s interest in multiple sports might be part of the reason why Otero embraces new ideas. He drinks protein shakes regularly. “After a workout, I’m not going to eat a bag of gummy bears. I get a lot of carbs, but I’m the only distance runner who drinks protein shakes,” he said. “It really helps with muscle recovery. […]

Maryknoll tops ‘Iolani on court, not in poll

By Nick Abramo on October 2, 2017

Despite beating No. 2 ‘Iolani on the court last week, Maryknoll could not overtake the Raiders in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 girls volleyball poll released today. The Raiders, who also lost a match to No. 1 Kamehameha last week and fell to 4-4 overall, kept their No. 2 ranking. The Spartans, who fell last week in a match to Punahou in the tough Interscholastic League of Honolulu, moved past Moanalua and into the No. 3 spot in the Top […]

Mililani, Kahuku tied in Star-Advertiser Top 10

By Billy Hull on October 2, 2017

Two-time defending OIA champion Kahuku had arguably its best outing of the season on Friday when it dismantled Campbell, 45-6, to clinch the OIA Blue Division title. Yet, there’s a growing swell among voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 that the Red Raiders might not be the favorite in the OIA playoffs. Mililani, which blanked Kailua 52-0 to end the regular season on Saturday, moved into a tie for second with Kahuku in the latest state rankings released […]

HAWAII GROWN: UO’s Apelu out for the season

By Billy Hull on October 2, 2017

Oregon coach Willie Taggart announced at a press conference on Monday that linebacker Kaulana Apelu, a 2015 Kamehameha graduate, will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his ankle in a 45-24 win over California on Saturday. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior shot up the middle on the first play of the second quarter and tackled Cal running back Vic Enwere for a 2-yard loss. Apelu rolled over and got up but then quickly motioned toward the sideline and ran […]
