Tanuvasa, an honorable mention All-State selection as a junior, is the seventh Crusader selected to the annual high school football all-star game for seniors only, joining quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, receiver Jonah Panoke, long snapper Peyton Yanagi, linebacker Noa Purcell and defensive backs Kama Moore and Isaiah Tufaga. Tanuvasa is the anchor of an offensive line that […]

Fast tempo sparks Damien over Pearl City

By Paul Honda on October 26, 2017

At times, the Damien Monarchs have looked like a team of destiny. The football team hasn’t done too badly, either. It’s Damien’s girls volleyball team, the one that was close to capturing the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II title, that is one of the teams to reckon with at the state tourney. That much is certain after a 25-12, 25-9, 25-15 sweep of Pearl City on Wednesday night in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA D-II State […]

Kahuku football featured by Sports Illustrated

By Nick Abramo on October 25, 2017

The Kahuku football team is prominently featured in a Sports Illustrated story on si.com. An in-depth story, written by Austin Murphy, was posted on SI.com Wednesday and can be read here. Murphy calls the Kahuku football program “the most interesting, exotic, surprising football program in the U.S.” And he proclaims it with apologies to Texas, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania. There are quotes from Red Raiders head coach Makoa Freitas, assistants Sola Soliai and Faasea Mailo as well as from former […]

Tobita was one set away from elimination for the second day in a row when she and her teammate rallied to beat No. 1 seed Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic of California 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6). “We are really proud of the way we fought and […]

Kahuku rules the running clock

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2017

Football coordinator Richard Townsend and the others who ruled the OIA in 1999 probably could never have imagined a machine like the current Kahuku program. Kahuku’s success has turned the mercy rule into the norm rather than the exception. Since it was instituted by Townsend and the OIA in the 1999 season, there have been 32 playoffs games that ended under a running clock. Half of them occurred from 1999-2014 and the other half have happened in the last three […]

HAWAII GROWN: Tua having positive effect on Saban

By Billy Hull on October 24, 2017

No. 1 Alabama had an opportunity to secure its second shutout of the season last Saturday against Tennessee. The Crimson Tide held a 28-0 lead over the Vols when freshman Tua Tagovailoa (Saint Louis ’17) took over for Jalen Hurts at quarterback on the Crimson Tide’s second drive of the second half. Tagovailoa completed his first four passes and drove Alabama 73 yards to the Tennessee 5-yard line when he threw an interception that was returned 97 yards for a […]

Yards, points tough to come by in these OIA playoffs

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2017

Football has become a pass-happy sport over the last decade, but that trend seems to have come to an end in 2017. This season there have been an average of 20.7 points scored per team in the OIA playoffs, the lowest since an 18.8 mark in 2011. But points scored or points against doesn’t tell the story of defenses, the number of elite performances against it does. And there have not been many this year. Kapolei’s Titus Mokiao-Atimalala is the […]
