Montverde (Fla.) Academy, which features ESPN’s No. 1 recruit in the class of 2018, 6-foot-7 small forward R.J. Barrett, is one of seven mainland schools that will compete in the 16-team ‘Iolani Classic next month. Barrett, who recently reclassified from the class of 2019 to ’18, is originally from Ontario, Canada, and holds scholarship offers from Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan and UCLA among others. The Eagles also have a 6-foot-4 point guard, Andrew Nembhard, who is the 46th-rated recruit […]

Ka’aha’aina-Torres averaged 4.9 kills per set and led ‘Iolani to a 31-11 overall record, including its first ever Ann Kang Invitational championship. The only senior on ‘Iolani this season, Ka’aha’aina-Torres also had 33 aces, 211 assists, 33 aces […]

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

Former University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine and Punahou standout Shawna Kuehu is the new girls varsity basketball coach at Punahou. Co-Athletic Director Kale Ane confirmed the news this afternoon. “We have a former player who has had outstanding success in the high school and college Division I level. She’s excited about giving back,” Ane said. “She’s thrilled to build the program up to something everybody can be proud of.” Kuehu was the most dominant player of her generation as a […]

Pupule ballot: Ranking 1 through 45 and more

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

It’s a slightly lonely feeling, seeing all these good teams leave the dance. As I mentioned last week, losing eight teams/spots in the state-tournament field from last year’s wild and wooly event — which had 20 teams in three tiers — is a major bummer. In lieu of maximum participation and exhibition bowl matchups, the season (to me) has been cut short, short, short for too many programs. I’m also certain there are a few wrestling and basketball coaches who […]

Central Florida sophomore quarterback McKenzie Milton is one of 18 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, given to the college football player of the year, announced Monday. Milton, a 2016 Mililani alumnus, leads the nation with a 72.9 completion percentage, a passing efficiency of 199.7 and 11.28 passing yards per attempt. He’s also 14th in the country in both passing touchdowns (19) and total offense (321.6 yards per game). Milton is the only player from the American Athletic Conference named a […]

Q&A: Waipahu senior QB Braden Amorozo

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2017

There’s hardly a thing given freely in football, so Braden Amorozo dives deep into the well of knowledge. He studies. Like his favorite athlete, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Amorozo might study defenses morning, afternoon and night. But overcoming adversity? That doesn’t really derive from video study or any other cerebral journey. Down 15 points against Pearl City in the OIA Division II championship game, Amorozo’s Waipahu Marauders were in dire straits. “We knew nothing would be easy, but […]

Gap widens ahead of OIA title game

By Billy Hull on October 30, 2017

There were no changes in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser football rankings this week. Waipahu remained at No. 9 after holding off a pesky Pearl City squad, 23-22, in the OIA Division II championship game last Thursday. In the only other game played last week, Damien held off St. Francis, 13-12, to win the ILH Division II championship. The Monarchs, who earlier this season were ranked in the top 10 of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll for the first time ever, earned […]

Kahuku, Mililani, Hawaii Baptist finish in Top 10

By Nick Abramo on October 30, 2017

With solid showings in the state tournament, three teams — Kahuku, Hawaii Baptist and Mililani — jumped into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser girls volleyball Top 10 final rankings released Monday. Kahuku (13-6), which had an up-and-down regular season and won the third-place Division I match over league rival Kapolei, checked in at No. 7. Hawaii Baptist (13-5) moved into the No. 9 slot by making the D-II final, where the Eagles lost in four sets to Le Jardin. Mililani (13-3) stepped […]
