Q&A: Moanalua hoops coach Byron Mello

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2018

Moanalua surging higher on roller-coaster season A year ago, Byron Mello’s Moanalua team lost its first six games in nonconference play. All tough competition, all close losses. He was far from satisfied, but in the end, things balanced out and Moanalua finished with a solid year. This time, expectations were higher. Moanalua had its struggles, then began to peak late in the regular season. A late run evened their OIA East mark at 5-5, and then Na Menehune qualified for […]

Top-seeded Saints rolling with Ng brothers

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2018

The D-II brackets are narrowing and St. Francis, even with missing or departed players, are the clear team to beat again. The Saints outlasted Roosevelt 62-51 in the quarterfinal round last night at the Saints’ gym. The top-seeded team and defending state champion will host Kauai in tonight’s semifinal round. Kauai edged Hawaii Prep, the No. 4 seed, 53-50 last night. If you are a traditionalist and likes to see the KIF champion get the unofficial No. 5 seed when […]

STATE SEMIS: Takenaka, Punley to square off in final

By Nick Abramo on February 15, 2018

The bracket that never stops giving is moving on to the final. The two semifinal matches lived up to the billing of the loaded 170-pound class. Top seed Keanu Punley of Leilehua had to fight back from a two-point deficit to defeat Roosevelt’s Salvador Gonzalez 8-6 in overtime. Losing 6-4, Punley got a takedown with 20 seconds to go and then was able to keep Gonzalez from escaping. In overtime, once again Punley — the OIA champ — stopped Gonazalez […]

3 Goliaths and a David (Moanalua) remain

By Paul Honda on February 15, 2018

The questions remain and basketball fans debate. How did the ILH 2, Punahou, get a less difficult path that ILH 1 Maryknoll? Why is St. Francis, the top seed in D-II, playing at home? Twice? It all goes back to the HHSAA by-laws. A league champion must be split into a separate sub-bracket from its second-place team. In the case of Punahou, they’re the same sub-bracket as OIA champion Kalaheo (which lost last night to Moanalua). OIA 2 Kahuku and […]

STATE SEMIS: Watanabe shocks Garcia; Cabanban next

By Nick Abramo on February 15, 2018

Punahou’s Casen Watanabe was down by an overwhelming margin and looking surely to lose against No. 2 seed Logan Garcia of Moanalua in the 126-pound semifinals at the Texaco/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships Thursday at Blaisdell Arena. Yet, at the start of the third period, down 6-1, his Buffanblu coaches encouraged him. “This is the last two minutes, this is your time,” they said. Sure enough, Watanabe turned the tables and pinned Garcia at 4:21 and the sidelines erupted. “That’s why […]

STATE SEMIS: Ikei, Respicio advance; Miguel too

By Nick Abramo on February 15, 2018

Kaiser’s Roselani Ikei and Kamehameha’s Paige Respcio advanced to the final of the 132-pound girls division at the Texaco/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships Thursday at Blaisdell Arena. Ikei, the OIA champ, is going for her first state title, and so is Respcio, the ILH champ. “I have to be aware out there because (Paige) is a really good wrestler,” Ikei said. “As long as I keep my positioning right, I should be OK.” Respicio is confident. “I got this,” said the […]
