VIDEO: Cabanban’s fourth state title

By Nick Abramo on February 17, 2018

Corey Cabanban went up one weight class each year and conquered them all. The Saint Louis senior won his fourth state wrestling title Thursday night, this one at 126 pounds to go along with the ones he won at 120, 113 and 106. He is only the fifth Hawaii boys wrestler to get four. The others are ‘Iolani’s Patrick Higa (1983-86), Saint Louis’ Jonathan Spiker (2000-03) and Brandon Low (2003-06), and Mid-Pacific’s Josh Terao (2011-14). Below, watch Cabanban’s 7-2 victory […]

Punahou’s title win over Kahuku all about family

By Paul Honda on February 17, 2018

The years of frustration came to an end for Punahou. At the same time, the clock struck midnight for Big Red. Punahou’s 64-37 win was possibly the best performance for a group of seniors who had worked four years to reach the mountain peak. The final of the Snapple/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships drew 2,902 spectators who sounded more like 6,000 roaring fans at Stan Sheriff Center. The buzz in the arena lasted for just a few minutes. By the […]

Saints make it back to back D-II state titles

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2018

The St. Francis Saints have come a long way. With a 76-52 win over Damien on Friday night, the Saints won their second boys basketball Division II state title in a row. Coach Ron Durant stuck with the winning formula: a heavy dose of Kameron Ng and Kordel Ng off the dribble, occasional sprinkles of 3-point bombs from Bryce Nishida, plenty of steady ballhandling and floor leadership from Jett Tanuvasa, big post play from Boris Vukovic, and lots of energy […]

Baldwin KOs Punahou to set up all-N.I. final

By Nick Abramo on February 16, 2018

They come from the Neighbor Islands, but the Baldwin Bears were anything but neighborly to Punahou on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Bears pulled off a 3-1 shocker against the Buffanblu to move on to the Division I boys soccer state final against Hawaii Prep on Saturday night in what will be the first all-outer-island championship game. Kane Palazzotto knows how tough it is to make it this far, especially coming from Maui. “We were the last […]

The Rematch: Kahuku vs. Punahou for the title

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2018

At Punahou, state championships aren’t a given. They are, as always, the standard. The Buffanblu won their first boys basketball state title in 1970 under Bud Scott and have nine crowns in their trophy case. The most recent was in 2012 under current coach Darren Matsuda, and the Buffanblu have played in the last two state finals. Kahuku broke through last season with its first state title in the classification era. The Red Raiders won Class A titles in the […]

Monarchs seeking minor miracle against Saints

By Paul Honda on February 16, 2018

They know each other quite well. The Damien Monarchs have done good in their first trip to the state tournament since 2014. The small Catholic school on Houghtailing Street endured their share of adversity, but even after losing key players, Coach Alvin Stephenson’s young team qualified for the big dance. St. Francis has been in the limelight long enough, another small Catholic school with big-time dreams. The defending state champions in Division II boys basketball is having another epic season. […]
