By Paul Honda on September 10, 2021

Down 8-0 in the opening minutes, the ‘Iolani Raiders faced an uphill battle against the upstart Kamehameha I-AA Warriors. Sterling Sakashita made sure of it. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound senior was everywhere defensively with double-digit tackles against a balanced Kamehameha offensive attack. With the Raider defense swarming on Warriors quarterback Noah Spencer and running back Moe Passi, No. 7 ‘Iolani rallied for a 35-20 victory at Aloha Stadium. ‘Iolani improved to 3-0 with its toughest battle so far in the ILH […]

Kamehameha I-AA relying on size, savvy in the trenches

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2021

Wade Inn doesn’t have a lack of gargantuan-sized linemen. When the Kamehameha I-AA football team meets No. 7 ‘Iolani (2-0) on Friday afternoon at Aloha Stadium, the Warriors coach can count on sheer size up front. It’s just that he doesn’t have a surplus of them, particularly at the varsity level. “We don’t have a true second O-line, so eight of them rotate. We’re going to try whatever we can to gain advantages. We like to run the ball and […]

A comeback journey to remember for Punahou’s Malia Dickhens

By Paul Honda on September 7, 2021

Patience is the difference for athletes on the mend. Malia Dickhens’ shin splints led to a stress fracture and as much recovery through cross-training as imaginable. “The stress fracture started March of 2020 and pretty much ended last month,” the Punahou senior said. In today’s edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Dickhens shared her long road back to competition. She won the ILH cross country championship as a sophomore in the fall of 2019. After miles of swimming and cycling (on […]

Survive and grow: Pac-Five moving forward one step at a time

By Paul Honda on September 4, 2021

In 2019, Joshua Arcayena was a playmaking sophomore. The linebacker/running back was active, productive and one of several key contributors to a Pac-Five football squad that went 6-3 in OIA/ILH Division II interleague play. In ’21, the Wolfpack had to fight to stay alive as a program. The pandemic nearly wiped out a five-decades old conglomerate, but new coach Kena Heffernan, his staff and players kept the fire burning. Now a senior, Arcayena is one of a handful of returnees […]

Entering weekend No. 2 of ILH football, Wade Inn is stoked for his Kamehameha squad. The team formerly known as the junior varsity is now a I-AA team — the ‘B’ squad of one of the league’s premier, powerhouse programs. The Warriors are on schedule to face Damien on Friday afternoon, 5 p.m., at Aloha Stadium. “We are just excited for the opportunity to play football after all this time because of COVID,” Inn said. His team had a bye […]

A ‘gentle giant’: Hawaii mourns loss of Punahou legend Ia Saipaia

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2021

It was an era when guards rarely dominated from long range. Ia Saipaia found a way. Scoring on the baseline. Pump-faking and driving through narrow gaps. Hitting 22-footers off the dribble. Finding open teammates. The young hoopster from Kuhio Park Terrace didn’t say a whole lot. A man of action. Saipaia died on Monday from COVID-19 symptoms, just 63. He died of COVID-19 symptoms and was fully vaccinated, according to his wife, Jean Miyashiro-Saipaia. “Hopefully, it is a lesson to […]
