Brady bounces back for Punahou

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 18, 2018

Embedded within Hugh Brady’s bounce-back performance on Friday were several examples of the Punahou quarterback’s resilience. Coming off a tough second half in a season-opening loss to Kahuku, Brady turned in a brilliant first half against Kapolei to help power the fifth-ranked Buffanblu to a 34-21 win over the No. 9 Hurricanes. Punahou elected to receive the opening kickoff and Brady led the Buffanblu to two quick first downs. But on the sixth play of the possession, Kapolei’s Samson Faleafine […]

No. 8 ‘Iolani right at home in Division I

By Billy Hull on August 18, 2018

Kaua Nishigaya‘s first year of varsity football included seven consecutive games against either Saint Louis, Kamehameha or Punahou. That was two years ago. Now, as an ‘Iolani senior, Nishigaya feels the Raiders are right where they’re supposed to be. “These past two years we’ve faced a lot of adversity and finally it’s going our way,” Nishigaya said after Friday night’s 33-12 win over Kailua at Alex Kane Stadium. “I think this is the correct division for us to play in.” […]

Saint Louis coach Cal Lee and Narbonne (Calif.) coach Manuel Douglas talked after the Crusaders’ 47-7 win over the Gauchos, who are the defending CIF Single-A state champion.

Saint Louis’ defense makes statement

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2018

Even with a young nucleus at the skill positions, the Narbonne Gauchos are explosively dangerous. Saint Louis answered with a well-prepared defensive game plan, limiting the visitors from Harbor City, Calif. to 157 yards of total offense in a 47-7 blowout victory on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. The Crusaders sacked Narbonne’s sophomore quarterback, Jaylen Henderson five times, all in the first half. Henderson, who finished 10-for-23, 118 yards with three picks, was greeted in the backfield by Jordan Botelho, […]

Narbonne’s Douglas: Saint Louis a better team this year

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2018

The sequel was a success again for Saint Louis and not much fun for Narbonne. It wasn’t quite so thrilling, but the Crusaders’ 47-7 rout of Narbonne (Harbor City, Calif.) could be filed under the clinical documentary category. For all four quarters, Saint Louis was relentless defensively, allowing only a 10-yard fake-field goal run by Steve Jenkins — the pigskin was arguably outside of the pylon as he leaped — in an otherwise stellar performance. Saint Louis entered the game […]

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2018

No. 2 Kahuku 49, Waianae 13, final 10:30: Game over. 10:23: Good news. Bad news. For Waianae. Lopes throws a 40-yard TD pass to Daniel Wetter, but is hit hard by Kahuku’s Tyson Pualoa and goes down, needing medical attention. He walks off the field, but is shaken up. Joshua Cid kicks the extra point. KAHUKU 49, WAIANAE 13, 3:11 left in game. 10:15: After a short Waianae punt, Ikaika Wells catches an 18-yard TD pass from Sauvao. An Erickson […]

GAME NIGHT 8/17: Punahou/Kapolei

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 17, 2018

No. 5 Punahou 34, No. 9 Kapolei 21, FINAL  Terrell takes three handoffs and gets to the 1. Punahou takes a knee and that’ll do it. Kapolei feaces fourth and 2 at its 24. Waiolama takes the handoff and is inches short. Punahou takes over. 2:05 Q4. Kapolei kicker Micah Fonoti recovers his own onside kick, but Kapolei is called for illegal touch and it’s Punahou ball at midfield. A lot of the starter back in for Punahou. A third […]
