By Billy Hull on August 30, 2018

UCF junior quarterback McKenzie Milton threw a touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter and then took a seat. The 2016 Mililani alumnus kicked off his third season with the Knights — and first under new head coach Josh Heupel — looking exactly like he did when he ended last year’s perfect season with a Peach Bowl win over Auburn. Milton threw for 346 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown passes, and also rushed for 50 yards […]

Q&A: St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2018

It isn’t easy being the top dog. At St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., head coach Jason Negro has his share of blessings. There’s the brand-new, privately-funded football facility on campus. No more bus rides to play home games at a local junior college. The ride to the top of the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings has been phenomenal. (The Braves are also No. 2 in the USA Today Super 25.) Mililani is already in California preparing for their Friday showdown […]

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2018

The most recent schedule released by the OIA shows no games scheduled for the Kalaheo and Waialua junior varsity football teams. This is something new at Kalaheo and something that happens nearly every season at Waialua. At Kalaheo, varsity coach Darrell Poole is not throwing in the towel as far as the JV team goes. “We still have a JV team that is practicing, but there are barely 15 kids,” Poole said. “That’s not enough to play games (safely). There […]

Kamehameha wins on and off field in California

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2018

The scoreboard is one thing. The life experience is another. The Kamehameha football team went to Carson, Calif., last week and scored a 17-6 victory over the Carson Colts on Friday. For coach Abu Ma’afala and the Warriors (2-1, 1-1 ILH Open), the trip was so much more than just a win on the scoreboard. “We took the red-eye out on Tuesday and landed Wednesday morning and hit the road running,” Ma’afala said. “We went to San Fernando Valley and […]

Former Damien athlete loses lawsuit against ILH

By Nick Abramo on August 28, 2018

A state circuit judge ruled in favor of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and executive director Blane Gaison in a lawsuit challenging the league’s transfer rule. Last month, the parents of former Damien football player and wrestler Keoua Kauhi filed, dropped and then refiled the suit. At an Aug. 21 hearing, judge James Ashford made a summary judgment in favor of the ILH. Due to that summary judgment, Ashford did not consider a temporary restraining order or a preliminary injunction […]
