VIDEO: Kapolei’s defense shines at midway point

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2018

Up. Down. All around. The Kapolei Hurricanes have endured through adversity. Traveled near and far. Halfway through their regular season, the ‘Canes are ascending. With an offense that is finding its footing, No. 8 Kapolei is on a two-game win streak, now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in OIA Open play. It is defense, where they are deep and fairly experienced, where the Hurricanes are making their biggest strides. Kevin Burkel, originally an inside linebacker, is thriving outside. He sparked the […]

Football finds former UH LB Blaze Soares again

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2018

Not being involved in football for eight years may be one of the best things that ever happened to Blaze Soares. Now that he’s back — as an assistant coach — he full appreciates how fortunate he is to have rekindled his love of the game. “I fell out of it and wasn’t really in love with the sport anymore,” said Soares, the former Castle and University of Hawaii linebacker, about the time after his college eligibility ended in 2009. […]

By Nick Abramo on September 13, 2018

Not this year. Last year, Kapolei broke through for a rare victory against Mililani in the OIA girls volleyball regular season. On Thursday night, the Trojans overpowered the Hurricanes 25-11, 25-15 at the Mililani gym. With the win, Mililani took over sole possession of the OIA West standings at 5-0. The Hurricanes — who are coming off two highly impressive seasons in a row — fell to 4-1. Junior hitter Falanika Danielson pounded 10 kills with one block for the […]

Pupule ballot: Leilehua soars, Damien hangs on

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2018

Damien’s clutch win over Waipahu makes a big difference for voters. But are the panelists ignoring Moanalua? The air force of Na Menehune are gripping and ripping the pigskin, or rather, quarterback Nick Au is. Moanalua doesn’t crack this ballot, but that could change depending on how the matchup with Leilehua — another red-hot squad — goes on Friday. Here’s how I voted in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 this week. Pupule ballot Football Top 10 Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 […]

Hernandez passes Yonamine at No. 5 on OIA wins list

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2018

Darren Hernandez has coached plenty of football. He also loves to crank out a player’s video highlight, or several, and get them out to college coaches. It just so happens the longtime coach has done just that for decades while at Kapolei. But going back to his years as Campbell’s coach, Hernandez has racked up a formidable record. When the Hurricanes shut out Waianae on Saturday, Hernandez, now in his 23rd season as a head coach, surpassed Masa Yonamine for […]
