VIDEO: Moanalua improves to 4-0 with win over Leilehua

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

The OIA Division I showdown between Moanalua and No. 9-ranked Leilehua, two football teams unbeaten in league play, promised to be an offensive explosion. Instead, this turned into a battle in the trenches, the lowest-scoring game for the visiting Na Menehune and the host Mules. Led by defensive lineman Tupu Alualu, Moanalua limited one of the state’s top running backs, James McGary, to 12 yards on eight carries. Moanalua prevailed 23-10 to seize sole possession of first place.

Akana helped the Warriors finish in sixth place and the Raiders ended the tournament in ninth. Kamehameha made it into the championship division but got swept 25-17, 25-22 by Redondo Union (Calif.), which made it to the title match before losing to Assumption (Ky.). The Warriors came back to […]

Kekahuna’s 2 90-yard TD’s highlight St. Francis win

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

Before every game, Joseph Kekahuna has simple, but pertinent advice for grandson Shepherd Kekahuna. “Take no prisoners.” Kekahuna did exactly that, clutching up in a scoreless battle with a determined Pac-Five squad on Saturday afternoon at Aloha Stadium. The versatile, two-way Saint returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown, and moments later, he broke off a 98-yard TD run. He finished with 110 rushing yards on five carries, and also caught three passes from Bubba Akana for 59 yards. […]

No. 5 Mililani lays the wood on No. 4 Campbell

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2018

Campbell coach Darren Johnson gave a tongue-in-cheek comparison of fortunes to the University of Hawaii football team as he walked off the field at John Kauinana Stadium. “They bachi’d us. When they win, we win,” Johnson said of the Rainbow Warriors, who fell by a touchdown at Army earlier Saturday in West Point, N.Y. And so it was that No.4 Campbell (4-1, 1-1 OIA Open Division) received a 52-14 beatdown at the hands of an extremely motivated No. 5 Mililani […]

Tuitele sparks Crusaders’ comeback win over Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

On paper, No. 1 Saint Louis secured a hard-earned 35-28 win over No. 3 Punahou on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. In reality, the game turned on the stealth presence and performance of its defense. The injured leader of the ‘D’ didn’t get consistent snaps until halfway through the second quarter. Faatui Tuitele makes that much of a difference, and the Crusaders improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in ILH Open play. Punahou dropped to 3-2 in league play (3-2 overall) […]

Farrington rises up to beat No. 8 Kapolei

By Nick Abramo on September 16, 2018

Talk about a feel-good win. Farrington defended its home turf at Skippa Diaz Stadium Saturday night by blanking No. 8 Kapolei 13-0. The Govs (2-4, 1-2 OIA Open) pulled off the upset with muscle up front, muscle at running back and muscle on defense. It was old-school all the way. Samsen Tanuvasa carried the ball 25 times for 90 yards, eating up chucks of real estate and time on the clock. Cameron Faletufuga, a defensive lineman, and Calijah Mareko led […]

By Paul Honda on September 15, 2018

‘Iolani football has always been about “One Team”. On Saturday night, running back Kaua Nishigaya and placekicker Mika Makekau reached new heights, and their success led ‘Iolani to a tough 30-19 win over Damien in an ILH Division I battle at Aloha Stadium. ‘Iolani improved to 3-1 in league play (4-2 overall). Damien took its first loss in regular-season play and is now 3-1 (3-2 overall). Makekau continued to rise to her enormous potential. She drilled three field goals, including […]
