Kamehameha’s big win over Punahou a little sweeter for Sierra Scanlan

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2021

When the pandemic extended beyond 2020, Sierra Scanlan‘s heart broke a little. Then a junior, the Kamehameha setter opted out of athletics in the spring while the ILH moved the girls volleyball season from fall of ’19 to the spring of ’20. Kamehameha won the ILH title without Scanlan. But fast-forward to this fall, and the boarder from Puna on the Big Island is a key part of Kamehameha’s title chase. Sitting in the bleachers at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium on Tuesday […]

Fireball power: Zoe Slaughter is a sparkplug for No. 4 Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2021

In another year, she may have just been a little too saucy. Too spicy. Maybe too strong. This fall, Zoe Slaughter is among her peers and people, a magnetic, electric jolt on a squad of intense, jovial and driven volleyball lifers. Moanalua is ranked fourth in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, 2-0 entering the second week of OIA regular-season play. Slaughter, a libero, is glue gal. Coach Alan Cabanting calls her “spunky” and the positive charge who keeps everyone’s […]

The international flair of Waialua’s clutch win over McKinley

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2021

The difference between a silent bus ride and a boot-stomping return home to Waialua rested on the sturdy left foot of Lasse Stolten. The sophomore exchange student from Germany, playing in a football game for the first time in his life, connected on two field goals as Waialua rallied past McKinley, 15-13, in a thriller on Saturday night. “I’ve been here three months. I thought, I’ve got to make this for the team. It was a struggle, but also, like […]

Kamehameha in fourth week atop Football Top 10

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2021

Kamehameha’s clutch gene is alive and well. Coaches and media granted the Warriors 10 of 12 possible first-place votes in today’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. That makes it four weeks in a row with Kamehameha a No. 1 ranking, including the last three as an outright top-ranked team. Kamehameha rallied past Saint Louis, 34-31, on Friday to seal the top seed in the ILH Open Division playoffs. Kahuku won handily at Kapolei, 41-7, and rose from No. 4 to a […]

Punahou still No. 1, Baldwin enters Girls Volleyball Top 10

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2021

Punahou collected nine of 10 possible first-place votes to remain No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. Under first-year Buffanblu coach Tita Ahuna, Punahou has been atop the rankings for three weeks in a row. Baldwin entered the Top 10 for the first time this season. The Bears, under new coach Al Paschoal, have swept Lahainaluna, Kamehameha-Maui and King Kekaulike en route to a 3-0 start. Paschoal previously coached at King Kekaulike and is a graduate of Baldwin. […]

‘We’re built for this’ — No. 1 Kamehameha rallies past No. 2 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2021

Like the wind, momentum is a fickle fiend one minute. A precious friend the next. Kamehameha’s second narrow in over Saint Louis in as many tries betrayed all kinds of trends and theories. After all, ILH sports and academics are all about immense and intense competition. Iron sharpens, but in ILH football, it is that shot to the gut, the solar plexus, that has defined the Open Division. Now, with a come-from-behind 34-31 win over Saint Louis, Kamehameha (3-1) can […]

No. 4 Moanalua fueled up for a title run in OIA

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2021

Senior libero Zoe Slaughter calls her team, in a word, “motivated.” Senior Kelia Giusta describes this fall’s Moanalua girls volleyball team this way: “energetic.” The co-captains nod in agreement when they hear what coach Alan Cabanting‘s description. Cabanting calls them his “fireball” squad. “That’s pretty good,” Slaughter said. This year’s team has plenty of natural intensity. A team that embraces the fire. Fourth-ranked Moanalua is 2-0 in the return of OIA girls volleyball, posting wins over No. 5 Kahuku — […]

OIA announces return of spectators Oct. 20

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2021

On a limited basis, spectators will be allowed back to OIA sporting events on Oct. 20. The league posted the news on its Twitter page, noting the requirements of masks, proof of COVID-19 vaccination and social distancing. Fans have not been permitted to see games involving public high schools statewide since the first lockdown in March of 2020. The Oct. 20 timeline falls in line with the statewide mandate for loosening restrictions for outdoor and indoor events. Actual size of […]
