The best — and closest — Open Division showdown involving defending state champion Saint Louis in the first half of the season was a zany exchange of big plays by Punahou’s offense, defense and special teams with the Crusaders’ uneven defensive performance. Then Crusaders defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele emerged with 9:01 to go in the second quarter, and everything changed. Down 21-14, the Crusaders took command of the line of scrimmage en route to a 35-28 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Damien-Moanalua game moved to Radford

Friday’s Damien vs. Moanalua OIA-ILH interleague football game has been moved to the Radford High field, according to OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka. Moanalua has been having an issue with its stadium lights, Tanaka said. In addition, the McKinley vs. Moanalua JV game, which starts at 5 p.m., has also been moved to Radford. Kapolei’s Hernandez faces Cal Lee for first time

Kahuku DE named Polynesian Bowl All-Star

Kahuku’s Tausili Fiatoa, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive end, has been selected a Polynesian Bowl All-Star. Fiatoa, who transferred from Orem (Utah) for his senior season after starting his high school career with the Red Raiders, is the second Kahuku player selected to the game, joining offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi. ‘Iolani’s 30-19 victory over Damien was a huge step for the Raiders over their ILH Division I foes. It was also a game of highlights for running back Kaua Nishigaya, who rushed for a career-high 226 yards. Placekicker Miki Makekau also set a state record for longest field goal by a female kicker, making a 44-yarder. She finished with three crucial field goals in the game.
