Nothing will come easy for Kailua this season

By Christian Shimabuku on October 6, 2018

After Kailua intercepted Na Alii quarterback Kayson Castillo on its own 1-yard line with eight seconds left, the coast was clear for the Surfriders to pick up their second win of the season on Friday night at Alex Kane Stadium. Until it wasn’t. On the very next play, the Surfriders fumbled on a quarterback sneak, giving Aiea the ball back at the Kailua 5 with three seconds left. Kailua needed one final stand from its defense, and after Castillo’s pass […]

Nishigaya (4 TDs) gets ‘Iolani on cusp of playoffs

By Brian McInnis on October 6, 2018

One Team is one win, maybe less, from clinching a state playoff berth. And ‘Iolani has its small assassin, senior running back Kaua Nishigaya, to thank in very large part. Behind Nishigaya’s four touchdowns, the Raiders (7-2, 6-1 ILH Division I) moved to the cusp of clinching a state berth with a 41-14 win over Castle on Friday night. It was just the second time the teams played on the Knights’ field (third overall), and the Raiders emerged comfortably with […]

Roosevelt matches best 9-game start since 1992

By Jeremy Nitta on October 6, 2018

Entering their game Friday night with Roosevelt, the Pearl City Chargers were in control of their own destiny. With a win, they would remain atop of the OIA Division II standings, and tighten their grip on the No. 1 seed in the league playoffs. Instead, Roosevelt came in and handed Pearl City a humbling 49-14 beatdown. In the process, the Rough Riders now jump ahead of the Chargers in the standings, dropping Pearl City to third behind undefeated Kaimuki, which […]

Mililani finishes undefeated; Kapolei has work to do

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2018

The Mililani Trojans shook off a subpar, scoreless first quarter and went on a 35-point spree before halftime to finish their OIA Open regular season undefeated in Friday night’s 49-7 victory over Kapolei on the Hurricanes’ home field. Mililani (7-2, 5-0) will be sitting pretty with a bye for the next two weeks before they play a league semifinal game on the weekend of Oct. 26-27. For Kapolei, it’s desperation time. The Hurricanes (3-5 overall) are sitting at 1-2 in […]

Moanalua happy with precise passing, tenacious ‘D’

By Paul Honda on October 5, 2018

The textbook for Moanalua football in 2018 remains the same. All Nick Au and his Na Menehune teammates want is to perfect their creation. Au passed for 353 yards and four touchdowns, completing 32 of his 42 attempts, as No. 8 Moanalua coasted past Waipahu 29-5 on a humid Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Au’s yardage total on Friday ranks ninth in school history. His single-game high came nearly two months ago, a 375-yard performance against Castle. The precision of […]

Waipahu hangs tough despite Failauga’s absence

By Paul Honda on October 5, 2018

A 29-5 loss to front-running Moanalua wasn’t all minuses for the Waipahu Marauders. Quarterback Cody Marques struggled early, then seemed to come alive after making some heady plays, escaping the pass rush to get his team marching downfield. But injuries on back-to-back second-half drives ended his night. Marques finished with 151 yards through the air, 16-for-26 with an early interception. It was a learning experience for the young Marauders, who had a chance to move into a first-place tie. Moanalua […]
