Kahuku follows blueprint, gets heartbroken

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2018

A stunning 28-27 win by No. 6 Campbell over No. 4 Kahuku defied all logic. After all, Kahuku owned time of possession, controlled the line of scrimmage, and operated its game plan to near perfection. Big Red ran the ball 52 times for 213 yards, often out of their patented elephant formation with Wes Alo-Maiava (77 rushing yards before injury) and Zealand Matagi (102 yards) as wildcat QBs. In all, Kahuku had 67 plays from scrimmage. Campbell had 38 snaps […]

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2018

Kawe Johnson has always had a knack for excellence. He also had the clutch gene as a two-way standout at Kahuku, becoming the Star-Advertiser defensive player of the year as a senior. On Saturday night, it was Johnson’s ability to analyze, and then communicate with his offensive unit at Campbell that showed that he hasn’t lost that gift. Now offensive coordinator at Campbell, Johnson called a timeout in the final minute and made a key adjustment. Because of Campbell’s clutch […]

By Nick Abramo on October 7, 2018

The Kamehameha defense was sizzling hot Saturday night in a 27-0 pounding of Waianae. The Warriors kept the defensive motor running all night long, and 18 of their tackles went for negative Waianae yardage. In the end, the Seariders were held to minus-25 yards rushing and 154 passing for a net total of 129. As usual, there was the Hoku Arias factor. The linebacker had a fumble recovery and two sacks, including one in which he stripped the ball from […]

Tom-Makue’s leg helps end Damien’s state tourney hopes

By Kyle Sakamoto on October 7, 2018

Leilehua has emphasized special teams the past few weeks and Akoni Tom-Makue is leading the way. The Mules kicker made three first-quarter field goals and had a key punt late in the game as host Leilehua beat Damien 23-17 on Saturday in an OIA-ILH Division I game. “I have a lot of confidence in my O-line — they block for me and I just get the points done with my leg,” Tom-Makue said. Leilehua quarterback Max Nichols threw two touchdown […]
