By Billy Hull on October 25, 2018

The Pac-Five Wolfpack will have a player in the Polynesian Bowl for the very first time. Senior Leif Fautanu, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman, has been named a Polynesian Bowl All Star. Fautanu, who played both offense and defense this season, helped the Wolfpack match their best win total since 2011. He holds offers from Hawaii and UNLV. He will represent the Wolfpack in the third annual high school football all-star game set for Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 at Aloha […]

Kamehameha’s Kupono Blake named Polynesian Bowl All Star

By Billy Hull on October 25, 2018

Kamehameha defensive lineman Kupono Blake has been selected to the 2019 Polynesian Bowl. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Air Force commit has had a breakout season as a senior, putting himself in the mix for the state’s defensive player of the year award given out by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in December. He finished the season with four sacks in his final three games, including two in a playoff loss to Punahou. Blake is the third Polynesian Bowl All Star from Kamehameha, joining […]

Q&A: Saint Louis’ Faatui Tuitele

By Paul Honda on October 25, 2018

It’s been two weeks since Faatui Tuitele put his game uniform on. This time, everything he and his teammates at Saint Louis (8-0, 7-0 ILH Open) have dreamt of is on the line. The No. 1 Crusaders meet No. 2 Punahou on Saturday at Aloha Stadium with the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Open Division championship at stake. The winner advances to the HHSAA State Championships. The loser closes shop for the year. Tuitele, a defensive tackle who still has 39 […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kaiser Cougars

By Jerry Campany on October 25, 2018

The Kaiser Cougars have returned to the land of the living. Coach Tim Seaman took over a winless program that played in only one game last year and turned it around with a 4-4-1 record and the No. 4 seed in the OIA Division II playoffs. Knowing Seaman’s history at the school, it isn’t as big of a surprise as it should have been. Seaman took over the same program from Scott Chan in 1993 after a 1-7-1 year and […]

STATE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT: 5 spots clinched

By Nick Abramo on October 24, 2018

Five state football tournament spots have been clinched. Two OIA teams — Kaimuki and Roosevelt — wrapped up berths with victories last week. Those two teams meet for the OIA D-II tile and a seeded spot at states on Friday at Aloha Stadium. Previously, MIL D-II champion Lahainaluna and ILH D-I representative ‘Iolani qualified for states. Pac-Five, due to St. Francis forfeiting games for using an ineligible, is the ILH D-II representative, pending the Saints’ appeal to the ILH. Here […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Leilehua Mules

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2018

The Leilehua Mules revved up their offense and returned to perennial contender status the program has held for so long, winning as many games as it had since Mark Kurisu‘s first go-round as coach in 2011. The Mules have improved on their win total four years in a row for the first time since Nolan Tokuda‘s squads from 2005-2008. Leilehua was held below three touchdowns only three times, all of them losses, but the offense generated the program’s most points […]

Honold’s vision takes Hanalani from 0 to 50

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2018

It started with a vision. Four years later, Hanalani is one of the premier Division II cross country programs in the state. Jeremy Honold arrived in 2014 to a campus that didn’t have a program. With only 300 students grades 7-12, Honold brought a plan that was part science, part faith and 100 percent effective. Perspiration plus inspiration. Adam Harder is the top harrier in the ILH now after winning the boys individual crown last weekend. But solo work is […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Moanalua Na Menehune

By Jerry Campany on October 23, 2018

What was shaping up to be the greatest season ever for Moanalua Na Menehune came to a crashing halt against Castle on Saturday night, but the performances will make sure this team is remembered for a long time. Na Menehune went undefeated through the regular season and finished with eight wins, more than any since Arnold Martinez took the squad to a 10-2 season in 2009 in Division II. The team was dramatically improved on both sides of the ball, […]
