Extra prep has Mililani hoisting 2nd-straight title

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2018

The road from Meheula Parkway to a back-to-back boys bowling state championship took a much-needed detour to Hickam Bowling Center for the Mililani Trojans. The men of Troy captured the crown today, capping a two-day rampage that concluded with a 100-plus pin margin over eventual runner-up Mid-Pacific. The Owls made a huge run on Friday to get within distance, but Mililani had already built up a massive lead on Thursday. The Trojans made extra preparation for an alley they had […]

Fukushima goes from novice to state champ in 1 year

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2018

Nakoa Fukushima was 10 when his mom decided he would take up bowling. He went along for the ride, keeping older sister Jana company. Makoa had fun and still does when he practices at the Naval Station. His high score is already 166, though mom, Leinani, says his regular scores aren’t quite close to that. Jana Fukushima? In one year, the Mililani junior went from novice bowler to Hawaii state champion. “Oh my goodness. I don’t know what to say,” […]

Freshman Hipa starts at QB for Campbell

By Nick Abramo on November 2, 2018

Surprise: the quarterback for the No. 5 Campbell Sabers in their OIA Open Division third-place game against Farrington tonight was not senior Krenston Kaipo nor senior Kaniala Kalaola. Instead, freshman Blaine Hipa got the call to start, and he led the Sabers to touchdowns on their first two drives. He connected with Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa for 27 yards before Sky Lactaoen scored on a 17-yard run. Kaipo, a 5-foot-9, 220-pounder, has thrown for 1,287 yards and 13 TDs this season, but […]

Govs, Sabers battle for a state berth

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

Darren Johnson and the Campbell Sabers certainly didn’t want to play on the undercard of OIA Open championship night, but since they are here there is a matter of redemption to take care of. The Sabers lost to Waianae in overtime in the OIA’s third-place game last year, robbing them a trip to the state tournament in Johnson’s first year in Ewa. Should Campbell lose to Farrington this time, the Sabers would be the first program to lose the game […]

Mililani, Kahuku continue OIA dominance

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

For the 11th consecutive season, and 15th time in the last 16 years, the OIA top-tier football championship will go to either Kahuku or Mililani. If last year’s tussle is any indication, the game might go down to the wire. If it does, it will be a rarity. The big game in the public schools had been largely decided in blowouts since 2010, with the closest margin of victory being 13 twice before last year’s 35-31 Kahuku victory. Before that, […]
