P4P: Lahainaluna’s Saribay jumps to No. 4

By Jerry Campany on January 3, 2019

There is always plenty of debate on the pound-for-pound lists, but there is no debate about one thing: Sami Saribay rules the 107-pound weight class. The Lahainaluna senior took over the weight class when Kamehameha great Ashley Gooman moved up last year and has dominated ever since. Saribay took states at 107 last year and added a sweep of MIT, Officials and Paani tournaments this year. If she stays there through March, she could be the first girl to repeat […]

About that ILH boys hoops playoff scenario…

By Paul Honda on January 2, 2019

With St. Francis moving up from Division II to D-I, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu now has three berths in the D-I state championships. It’s a godsend for a league that has long been underrepresented in terms of quality programs. Often enough, there are four to five Top 10 teams in ILH D-I, and only two teams permitted to represent the league at the state tourney because of the HHSAA by-laws, which follow a mathematical formula for each league’s participation. […]

Punahou holds down No. 1, Kahuku boys return to poll

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2018

Punahou garnered nine out of 10 first-place votes to become the first team this season to hold down the No. 1 spot for a second week in a row. Unlike some ILH teams that traveled, the Buffanblu (15-1, 0-0) were idle from game action last week. They open league play on Thursday against Mid-Pacific, one of four consecutive road games to start the regular season. ‘Iolani (9-4, 0-0 ILH) remains at No. 2 after a busy week at The Classic […]

‘Iolani retains No. 1 spot, Kahuku leaps into Top 10

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2018

For a fifth week in a row, the ‘Iolani Raiders are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. The Raiders collected nine out of 10 first-place votes for the latest balloting on Monday. Lahainaluna has one first-place mention. ‘Iolani (14-6, 5-1 ILH) played in the Title IX DC Classic over the weekend, losing three games to powerhouse teams, including No. 9 National Christian Academy (Md.). The Raiders were competitive, but dropped as deep as No. 6 on one […]

Hoopbook: Kahuku flourishing despite departure of Kaufusi

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2018

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had a hit song back in 1970 that proclaimed, “Cecilia, you’re breakin’ my heart. You’re shakin’ my confidence daily. Oh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees. I’m beggin’ you please to come home.” Kahuku knew that feeling well a month ago, though the Lady Raiders have roared to success since. Kahuku is unbeaten in the OIA East at 8-0 after a 1-4 preseason. The Lady Raiders are without All-State Fab 15 post Sisilia Kaufusi, who […]

P4P: Kalaheo’s Rysan Leong jumps to No. 2

By Jerry Campany on December 31, 2018

Kysen Terukina keeps the top spot in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings and is approaching Terao territory despite his shocking loss to Kahiliwala Joy a year ago. Terukina prepped for Officials by taking his lumps in an elite mainland tournament and then came back home to dominate three league rivals at Officials including talented Brady Hoshino of ‘Iolani. After Terukina, Kalaheo’s Rysan Leong vaults up to second after breezing his way through Officials before a tough match in the final […]

Lahainaluna’s Nanea Estrella stands out at Pa’ani

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2018

Sometimes, Nanea Estrella taps into the power of music to recalibrate on the mat. Pre-match. Mid-match. The music flows in her mind, and she starts dancing as a way to refocus. On Saturday, it was, appropriately enough, a tune from an old Nickelodeon TV show, Victorious. Estrella did just that on Saturday at the Pa‘ani Challenge. Estrella, of Lahainaluna, outpointed Jahnea Miguel of Baldwin, 12-9, in a action-packed, entertaining 138-pound final between the Maui Interscholastic League’s highest-ranked wrestlers in Hawaii […]
