By Billy Hull on January 11, 2019

OIA West No. 1 seed Mililani will attempt to win its fourth consecutive Division I league crown in girls soccer when the playoffs begin Monday with four first-round games. The Trojans (8-0-2) earned a first-round bye and will host the winner between Roosevelt and Campbell on Tuesday. Moanalua (8-0-1) earned the No. 1 seed out of the East and will host the winner between Kailua and Wapiahu on Tuesday. The semifinals are set for Thursday at Kaiser and the championship […]

Waiakea ends Konawaena’s BIIF win streak at 124 games

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2019

The streak is over for the nine-time state champion Konawaena Wildcats. Waiakea put an end to Konawaena’s 124-game win streak in Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball, stifling the Wildcats 54-25 on Thursday night. “It was senior night for our team, too. As coaches, we were definitely excited,” Waiakea coach Brandon Kauhi said. “We had a good defensive game plan and tonight we hit those outside shots.” Waiakea made four treys in the game, three of them before halftime. “That’s […]

Hoopbook: A fine time at the free-throw line

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2019

Kawika Lee scored 16 points against Mid-Pacific, helping ‘Iolani rally from an 11-0 deficit. He knocked down three 3-pointers, but also shot 1-for-5 at the free-throw line. Unless he took 15 3-point attempts, he shot a better percentage under duress from the arc than he did at the foul line. Some shooters are better in motion. Sam Wheeler, in that same game at Mills Gymnasium, shot 7-for-8 from the charity stripe to boost the Raiders. I learned recently that he […]

Torres-Kahapea, Romero spark Kailua over Kaiser

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2019

The bull’s eye target is getting larger by the game for the Kailua Surfriders. Ranked No. 6 this week in the Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10, its highest point of the season, Kailua endured all Kaiser had to give early on before taking command for a 66-54 win on Wednesday night. Everett Torres-Kahapea poured in 30 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field. Kaiser’s stingy defenders were draped on the senior guard all night, but he neutralized their efforts with […]

BIIF will add 3 teams to 11-man football next season

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2019

News out of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation athletic directors’ meeting will have a big impact for Pahoa, Ka‘u and Kohala. The three schools had fielded eight-man football teams in recent years. Pahoa announced its plan to move into 11-man territory, and Ka‘u and Kohala will follow suit since staying in eight-man isn’t feasible. Pahoa and Ka‘u had rosters of 30 or more players, so the time is right. “We started in 2013 with 22 kids, and only 18 or […]

Hoopbook: Lady Trojans claim 1st in OIA West outright

By Paul Honda on January 9, 2019

The opportunity was there. A win would’ve been sweet for the mighty Mules. Leilehua entered Tuesday’s regular-season ending showdown at Mililani with a chance to step up and throttle the pecking order. A win would’ve given the Mules a share of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West, along with Radford (9-1). A three-way tie was possible. It didn’t happen. Mililani cemented its place atop the West with a 47-33 win. Dahlis Sablay led the unbeaten Trojans (10-0 OIA […]

Saint Louis WR added to 2020 Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on January 9, 2019

Saint Louis receiver Matt Sykes has been named a 2020 Polynesian Bowl All Star, the game announced today. Sykes, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior, competed in an underclassmen combine at the All-American Bowl last week in San Antonio, Texas, and was named to the All-Combine team. He missed half of his junior year with the Crusaders due to a broken leg and was eased back into the rotation toward the end of the season, finishing with six receptions for 89 yards. […]

No. 2 Maryknoll rallies past No. 5 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on January 8, 2019

It was a matter of will for No. 2 Maryknoll. Facing an unbeaten Saint Louis squad — one with two wins over St. Francis — the Spartans looked out of sorts early on. The first quarter looked like a mismatch. > Maryknoll shot 2-for-11 from the field. > The Spartans, who had spent hours on free-throw shooting in recent weeks, were 1-for-5 at the foul line. > Saint Louis outrebounded the visitors and had an 11-8 edge on the boards. […]
